Engine Block drain repair?

All,
OK, I got my Ring gear replaced, replaced all plugs, wires oil pan seal, distributor cap, radiator hoses, and condenser while I was at it. But I have an issue. The fluid drain on the side of the engine (right in front of the starter) had a temperature gauge added to it. I asked several folks and all said to just remove it as it was aftermarket and didn't need to be there. So I bought the original petcock to replace it BUT they must have bored the hole bigger and inserted a larger male end for the attachment. It is the same size as the Original(correct) petcock so it won't screw in. So I Tried to remove it but it was Brass and broke. So now I need to remove this and either close the hole or tap it so I can screw something in there to close it up. (Preferably the original drain). Has anyone had any issue like this, or know of a quick fix? Thanks!

just remove the brass adapter (you may need a little heat)and screw in another adapter that fits your block (1/2-3/4 NPT?) and one your drain petcock can screw
into (1/8NPT).

ASSUMING they "oversized" the hole to the next pipe thread size, 3/8" NPT, simply drill the broken brass adapter until almost all that's remaining is the threads, and carefully dig that little bit of brass out of the threads in the block, clean up the threads with a 3/8" NPT tap, obtain a brass 1/4" X 3/8" reducer bushing, and everything should fit together.

Obviously, the petcock will protrude farther from the block than OEM, shouldn't be a problem unless you have to please "The Correct Police".

If you can get a "flush" or "face" bushing, that would eliminate most of the extra protrusion.

I have removed many broken off brass fittings by just tapping a large flat screwdriver into what was left and turning it out.

i'm curious - was the sender leaking? if not, i'd be sure to thank the originality police for the needless extra work they created for me ;)

No it wasn't leaking, But when I started to tear the tractor down to replace the Ring gear The line they had attached to it broke. Since it wasn't needed I planned to just remove it and put the original Petcock in. Unfortunately the brass fitting broke, and yes I started to use a screw driver to turn it out, but since I couldn't do anything else that day... and it was cold as heck. I just left it to finish this weekend after I figured ut the best remedy. The tractor ran well, but had several small leaks and I have found that the previous owners "Restoration" consisted of about 2 gallons of paint, liberally applied... Red & Grey... So I am doing pretty much most of the hoses, wires and small electrical replacements while I have it apart. hopefully I will fire her up tomorrow.
