Is a bare engine block with nothing on it the same for a front mount as a side mount setup before adding all the other parts? If not how do you identify whether it is a front mount block or side mount block?

BMACK.......would you believe by engine serial number??? It should be intuitively obvious ALL 9N/2N engines are "frontmount" and start s/n 9N. 8N's changed to sidemount at engine s/n #8N-263843. ........Dell

ONE simple way to ID is that the later (side-mount distributor) blocks have cast "mounting bosses" for the generator on the LH side of the block, as the generator was moved from the RH side of the block to the left to make room for the side-mount distributor.

Guys, I should have been more specific before posting. As I mentioned in earlier posts I bought up what was left of an 8N restoration shop. 6 parts tractors mostly front mount units and shelved parts up the wahzoo. These blocks appear to be after market as they have no serial number stamped in the infamous serial number location. The casting numbers are 8N-C with a riveted tag on one that is M163 the other M173. They do have two bosses on the left side as Bob mentioned.

My 8n, which has no serial number, has the cast "mounting bosses"; has the oil filler tube both shortened and moved towards the rear; but has a front mount distributor and the generator on the RH side.

The block's cast ID is 8N-C and is cast vertically.

My research found that the stamping on the riveted tag is a date code. My tag reads B22 2, which means the block was manufactured Feb 22 of 1952. M16 3 is the 16th of 1953 and M is possibly November or December. I don't have the data at hand, but I remember that one or two letters were not used.

Example: A=January, B=February, etc.

sounds to me like a new Ford replacement block which will not have a sn stamped on it. I believe 8n-C was the last casting and isnt the date code in '53?

WHY are you worried about the casting #'s at this point... if they DO have the generator mounting provision, they can be used as front-mount OR side-mount blocks with the addition of the proper camshaft and front cover.

If you do have a replacement block it did not come with sleeves are harden valve seats.. a side mount block will work both ways...
