Engine Hoist

I need to get an engine hoist to pull my Farmall M motor....I was thinking about a Harbor Freight 2 ton engine hoist, anyone used this one, is it any good? Does anyone recommend another brand?

It's chinese, of course, but surprisingly well put together. First thing I did was replace some of the stock bolts with grade 8 ones. No issues.

My son in law just bought an engine hoist. He was able to find several on Craiglist and ended up buying one there even cheaper than he could have at Harbor Freight. Depending on your location, that might be an option.

Getting one that the legs fold up saves space.

For what you want to do it would probably work just fine but you may find you need more then one. In my shop I set up a 20 foot I-Beam up in the rafters and have 2 roller trolleys on it so splitting a tractor is child's play any more. I have hopes of adding another 10-15 foot to it so I can get things off a truck or trailer in real easy since the beam I have now starts at the center of the shop and goers back

There are many "simular" hoists available from various retailers.. I have two red ones that get used a "bunch" very handy and portable.

I have a Harbor Freight 2 ton engine hoist and it works fine. I've had it for years and I use it a lot more than I ever thought I would. Works great for deer season too. They're a little bit like a three point posthole digger in that you'll always be trying to remember whose house it's at lol!

Hard to argue with the price/quality.

But I'd scan craigslist first - a lot of guys buy them for one job, then quickly get sick of them taking up space.

I checked them out when I was there the other day. They seem like a nice product. Don't let anybody BS you that is it junk from HF. If you buy it at a farm store, Craftsman, or another other discount type retailer it is probably about the same crane. They all look near identical except for color.

The one ton is on a really good sale right now and didn't look much lighter built than the two ton. Might want to wait until next month at this point since the sales will change over and they may go to the two ton if you are lucky.

Agreed that it is the same stuff as sold in other places, but it is my EXPERIENCE that HF seems to get all of the cast-off items that didn't quite pass muster for the other stores.

Might be right, but they are 1/3 the price of Northern Tool and 1/4 the price of Farm and Fleet with the same warrenty. I live less than an hour from three stores so if it breaks I can probably take it back sometime. Not to mention there is a store about 6 blocks from my sisters house in West Allis (at the old AC plant). It isn't hardly out of the way if I do have a problem.

It is over 100 miles to the nearest HF any direction I want to go, and if I order something on-line, it is pretty much guaranteed the item they send me will be the one that has been returned because of a major defect.

Nope, I just flat refuse to go there anymore.

I have a 2 ton and a three ton. The two ton still works even though I have it sprung where all six wheels don't hit t round at the same time. I would look at the 3 ton cause once you have it you will find all sorts of uses for them. I sprung mine pulling loaded tires and hubs off an Oliver 1850. The jack was stronger than the legs.

just love guys who wont by from HF and keep trying to convince everyone nobody knows anything but them I buy from HF all the time and have for more then 10 years I have all the american brand tools but I never had a problem with anything from Harbor Freight love the fold up engine hoist and the motorcycle lift {works for garden tractors and makes lawn mowers and snow blowers easy to work on. just bolt on a piece of plywood to widen! just my humble 2 cents worth

I use my 1969 Yale fork lift. cost a little more but much more versatile.

Thanks for the help guys, I got the Harbor Frieght 2 ton hoist and the replacement agreement...Im only plan on using it a couple of times with something as heavy as a engine block then it will be used to remove/replace the U-draw bar and a saginaw hitch mainly...

I will say that some of the stuff from HF is junk but I have had real good luck with some other stuff...
