Engine man meet welder man?

I now have no doubt that Engine man has very high qualifications!... The only reason I think people giving him a hard time is because perhaps he posted at the wrong time...

His post offering advice maybe should have been posted more in the early spring when everybody is getting ready to do field work. Sometime around the beginning of April may have been more appropriate. Give the guy a break. He's only trying to help.

Farmer, I must admit that I haven't seen the thread that you are refering to, but I have not seen much condemnation of fellow poster/mechanics on this forum. Aside from the traditional rivalries, most people here at the tractor board have generally been respectfull of the other views and systems presented, here. I have reviewed some of the responses that I have posted, and I realize that some, such as welding cracked engine blocks, assume that everyone is profficiant at everything. I have not been chastised for this, and I try to remember that I am not always responding to a mechanic. Whenever we have a broad range of individuals, we have a broad range of experience that will result in suggestions that some will not be comfortable with. I once worked with an indian chief who replaced oil pumps by cutting an access hole in the crankcase, and welding it shut, when complete. I would very assertively recommend that no one who reads this, ever for any reason do that. Joe, notwithstanding this was an otherwise good mechanic, with superb troubleshooting skills. As I said, since this board doesn't generally address issues, such as religion or politics, I don't often observe hostile and combative posts.

Anyone who has been around this forum for long knows that there are a number of well-qualified folks who post here. They range from shade-tree mechanics with a lot of practical experience to degreed engineers. If someone like welderman/engineman presents himself as an expert with answers to everyone's questions, he'd better be prepared to prove himself.

"Engineman" and "Welderman" (who may or may not be the same person) are trolls who seem to be doing a pretty good job at raising the hackles of the old-timers here. I'll also note that I believe "welderman" made a very offensive post (later deleted) under a different name right before his first post.

Best thing to do with trolls is ignore them. They will go away when they realize they're not getting any reaction. And if welderman/engineman have legitimate credentials, they'll get plenty of chances to prove them in the coming weeks.

This kind of comes along the lines of demanding respect or earning respect. Engine man was not demanding respect at all, but he was trying to force his knowledge a bit, and the resistance came out in full force.

Earning respect is not something that happens overnight, but instead grows slowly as people get to know each other. If engine man could start posting with occasional respecful non-forceful, solid advice, he will eventually fit in the groove. Jim

The problem was in the way he presented himself- Pretty much "I am an expert, and will answer any of your questions". The boys didn't take it any too well, which is understandable. The range of esoteric questions asked was amusing, however.

I could be "sit on my duff in front of the computer and drink coffee" man. If anybody needs help with that one,I'm the resident expert to go to.

If he hadn't come in all high and might trying to tell use he knew it all he wouldn't have gotten such a hard time. Shoot he didn't even register hes just a guest and will probably not even stay around long enough to earn the respect of the old timers here. I mean you don't take your car to a shop and then go and tell the guy working on it how to fix it do you same works here. I even asked him a couple questions and he didn't answer one of them so he hasn't proven any thing and just seems to be full of hot air

I believe engineman, weldor man, and farmer man are the same man who made "those posts" that were deleted. I sorta talked to him and he said hes 15 and intersted in old cars. He sounds like someone looking for acceptence like i was over the summer and is trying to find it. My advice to all 4 (or 1) people is to stop pretending to know everything and to get one real handle and stick with it. Then sit back and learn about everything discussed around here and soon begin answering simple questions from people; like i did. Just stop pretending to be someone youre not. There are alot of people on here that are or could be professional mechanics. They know alot and if you accept that and that you dont know it all (neither do i) then they'll respect you and you will learn alot. There, one of many things ive learned here.

Just seems awful arrogant for someone to jump in & say "I'm an expert, what do you want to know", particularly considering the level of knowledge on this board. Turned me off instantly.

I have close to 50 years experience on mechanical things and I would never say I was an expert because there is just to many things out there that I have never seen an just as many that I have worked on but a tractor or car can have a million different variations that will drive one nuts. I do how ever know how to research my books and the net to find answers on most things. I never take my own advice as it may not always be correct giggle.

If your going to make an insult at least spell WELDOR MAN correctly, not welder man. Welder man refers to the welding machine. Weldor refers to the person doing the welding. See, you dont know everything.

I know for sure Farmer Man didn't! What is April 1? The guy could have came on and appologized for his ego. He insulted Old who was just testing his knowledge. Dave

Actually "weldor" is a term Lincoln coined to differentiate between the two. Back then "weldor" was not a proper word. Can I claim to be an expert now? I think not! Dave

I was just rying to help people with what knowledge i do know, and was simply asking for help on my 400 chevy engine on other posts at "troubles" and everybody jumped on me saying i was a dreamer but in fact i dont dream, i do! ANd for peoples info my car is a 1971 nova and i plant to put a 400 chevy with 350 turbo trans with 2500 stall converter and a 10 bolt posi- 3.08 ratio. Is that enouph info for you people!?

I wasnt claiming to be an expert, i just wanted to help people with their problems with what "little" experience i seem to have.

Precisely. There are engine questions aplenty on this and other boards. He could have picked out a few choice ones and offered advice. We would soon be able to tell how much he knew.

You finally gave a decent response! You can redeem yourself however. Perhaps you could tell us about yourself and what kind of work you have done? You would definetaly earn all of our respect. Respect is earned, not demanded. Thanks for responding! Hope you stick around. You might even laugh when another expert comes on a little too strong. We were just razzn' you for that reason. Dave

The only thing consistent here is the endless fussing by the regulars who can't handle an outsider. They are very intolerant of anyone that is not in the "group".

That sounds like a cool project! Please let us know if we can help. You HAVE earned our respect now and we would really like you to stick around. Ask Lanse, he was ready to leave but decided to stay because I think he really knows we do like him and you too. Forgive us if we came down a little hard on you. I think I speak for all of us? Welcome to the forum! Dave

I think if you would have been following along for the last week or so, you would have had a better understanding. Dave

The IP is the same, so whats going on? Bad weekend or something. Seen your IP showing up on here and on the origional engineman post and this one. So is it you or not?

i am 15 and am pretty good at stick welding, I am currently restoring/powerhousing a 1971 nova and i was just asking some simple questions on what would be the best combo for my 400 chevy engine. I listed some parts and a cam (cam duration and lift) and some people didnt agree and they lashed out on me. Im just trying to learn, but learning cam basics is like memorizing the dictionary. Its very difficult to learn the basics of cam and intake relation, but some combos that they listed sucked worse than mine, For one thing they were telling me to put an edelbrock performer intake manifold on which is dual plane, which almost all dual planes suck unless your building a torque engine, most of the time single planes work 100% better, or tunnel ram. So see I know some things just not everything.

Dave and Lanse, I am not trying to accuse anyone, I just want to know who is taking these sniper shots. I do hold the belief that Lanse is a better person than that. I am merely noting that the IP addresses appear to be the same unless I am looking at the wrong thing. If I offended anybody, I apoligise.

P.S. Lanse, how is that tractor going. Would like an update.

"Is that you lanse"

-Hell no. I noticed that with the IPs too. Trust me, i wouldnt pull this off. And i definatially wouldnt have taken it this far.

Thank God Lanse. Wanted to see who has been behind this sniper fire. Glad It wasn't you.
Hope I didn't offend you about this.

You diddnt. You just asked a question. I saw this thread some up and knew that was coming sooner or later. Besides i dont know a thing about cars or welding.

I thought maybe you could have asked a more general question without naming names, how that could happen. Sorry! Dave

Actually by putting on here that dual plane intakes suck and single plane intakes are better 100% of the time show you really don't know a whole lot of anything. Torque moves the car. That is why a dual plane will almost always be better for any car short of a nascar motor. And a tunnel ram? I just about lost my coffee whey I read that. Only class I have ever seen use them is pro stock. Do you have a pro stock Nova? They work good at the car shows too. Best thing you could do from what I have read is get some car craft and hot rod magazines and start reading about some of the engine builds on their pages. These guys were just trying to help. If you go your way you will be the guy that drives around town with your Nova with a 400 small block, tunnel ram with two 800 holleys on it, cam with about .320 duration, 2 1/8 inch primary headers, oil pan dragging the ground, 4.88 gears, L-60 15 rear tires telling everybody it runs 9's and go to the dragstrip and run a mid 15 second quarter at 88 mph. In the meantime your neighbor with a stock 5.0 mustang will drive up there with his girlfriend and run a 13.90 and blow you off the track. I wish I had a dollar for every time I have seen you at the racetrack.
