engine noise '64 2000

Does anyone else notice a lot of "gear train type" noise in their 134 gassers.I know it has timing gears instead of timing chain and gears and the hyd. pump is gear driven and this will cause a little more noise.Just wanted to no if any one else had noticed it in their engines?

When I had my injector pump rebuilt on my 172 diesel and was able to now idle it way down without it killing I noticed a gear train type noise. My noise is coming from the transmission though. I can tell this because it stops when I push in the clutch.

Are you sure it is coming from the engine?????????

Check the water pump. They start to growl when the bearings start going. I have had them growl for 100 hours before they started leaking. Keep an eye on it. Shake the fan. If it starts getting to loose the shaft can break, with fan in radiator, big mess! Also generator can also rumble with bad bearings

I have an old beater 850 that I work the snot out of.. it's valve train rattles.. but it always starts and works hard..

John:

The rattle from your transmission at low idle is caused the cluster gear moving back and forth on its shaft as a result of instability of the engine speed at low idle (The gears are helically cut).

Increasing the idle will eliminate it as will overhauling the transmission to eliminate excessive end play of the cluster gear.

I have checked water pump.Cranked the engine with belt of noise is still there.Noise is coming from rh side of engine. I have rebuilt the hyd pump with new bearings and the works and new drive gear.noise sounds like mid ways up on block around cam area.Engine has 45psi oil pressure hot.

Brian:

You say that you have rebuilt the hydraulic pump.

Did you properly set the backlash of the pump drive gear? It will be noisy if it is not properly set.

so can you tell me about backlash and how you set it. i have always heard of it but never got into anything that required adjustment for it. thanks

The cam gear on the front will make noise if it is loose on the camshaft. Also the gear on the other end of the cam that drives the pump can get loose (more likely), it could be checked when the pump is removed. Don"t know of any easy way to check the front gear. Listening with a stethoscope (or similar)might help narrow it down.
