Engine oil

Can anyone tell me what kind of engine oil can I use in my 1937 c model case, tractor is for showing only. Not going to work it.

any good quality 30w automotive oil is adequate for anything you want to do with it,some would lead you to believe that it won't even run without that rotella crap in it

use Shaffers 30 weight myself.

I don't want to ruffle anyone, but a salesman told me once that men are more loyal to their oil than to their wives. Anyways, why would someone want to use an oil in their engine that was formulated 100 years ago, ie: non-detergent oil. Todays oils are formulated for maximum engine protection against wear & filth by holding filth in suspension and not sludging up the engine. If the old "C" is just for Summer use, a straight SAE30 High Detergent should be fine. I have my preference of brands, but will keep that to myself.

I agree with John providing the engine has been cleaned of sludge prior to using the detergent oil.

The purpose of detergent oil is to keep the sludge & particulates in suspension for trapping in in-line oil filters and draining with oil changes.

Older tractors mostly did not have oil filters or had by-pass filters. The sludge & particulates dropped out of the oil in the pan and sometimes elsewhere in the engine. Pans & valve covers were pulled on maintenance schedule and cleaned by hand.

Detergent oil w/o cleaning the engine will clean it for you through the bearings & other moving parts. Can also plug oil passages.

Thanks for the engine oil infor it helps me a lot. I will be using 30w oil.
