engine seized suddenly on starting

I have a 1961 MF205 Workbull. It has a three cylinder diesel with the instant reverse transmission. When I started it on Friday morning it fired right up. When I tried to give it more trottle motor stopped dead with a mechanical clunk and I was unable to turn it over with the starter. Pulled started and the hydraulic pump on front of engine, (both OK) was unable to manually turn over engine by hand. What's my next step? Pull the engine or is there anything first I can do to try to diagnose the problem This tractor has a FEL on it, so it won't be fun to split the tractor to get at the engine. But I'll do what I have to do to get it going again. Anybody have an idea what could have broken? Thanks eveybody for your help.

Was there enough oil in the crankcase?
I would drain the oil and drop the oil pan to look for damaged parts.
You might check the hydraulic pump to see if it seized, but I doubt that.
The next step would be to remove the loader.

Thanks Brian, that would be a good start. I did check the oil before starting, but I don't remember looking at the oil pressure gauge, it all happened in seconds. I used the hydraulic pump,(driven by a 1/2" electric drill) to get the back hoe attachment off the back of the tractor and raise the FEL bucket. Don't look good. Hoping someone knows what usually goes wrong with these Perkins engines. Thanks, Bob

before you split or take oil pan off put the tractor in neutral and see if it will freely roll. forgive me i have never seen your tractor model so i may give advise that wont work for you . hold the clutch in see if trans is free . if you find that the trans is free , tractor will roll then the i would pull the oil pan and check for a broken rod . if it will not roll the trans could have the engine locked . good luck sir
