engine sleeve

When it rains it pours.
Pulled head. Number two sleeve is loose. Comes up with piston. No witness marks from sleeve on head. HOWEVER, witness marks on head and pistons from pistons hitting head! One piston had no marks, two had marks that were just barely visible, one you could see.
New pistons and pins. New bearings throughout. Rod bushings were not replaced but tight.
Neither head nor deck height were milled. Don't know if P.O. had ever milled head or block but I have owned tractor since '74 and it never knocked before.
Rods have stretched (why didn't it knock before)
new pistons are wrong pistons, etc.? Pin height in pistons wrong?
Take a grinder to combustion chamber? Thicker gasket?
Talked to N tractor "expert" in Tulsa. He can't think of anything I haven't already mentioned. He claims that new heads have more clearance. Wants to sell me new head.

Roy Ward is his name. Phone # 918-425-1754
He is on E 66 th N just west of Lewis. Around the 2400 block. Always has several "N" tractors for sale out front.
Don't really know how "expert" he is but he knows more than I do. (Of course you don't have to know a great deal to know more than me.) From what I gather (some of it speculation) he originally farmed until the town grew up around him. He used to deal in used "N" parts. He still has some used but sells new parts. When you include shipping (and especially wait time) he is competitive.
He has been gathering up a lot of used stuff and scrapping it out. (Seems a shame to me) Says there isn't any money in used parts anymore.

You must be winding it out too high pulling in the modified classes, ya know those Ns don't like turning over 3500. You can use Loctite sleeve glue to glue the loose sleeve in. It works well.

take a die grinder and relieve the head to give piston clearance. be happy.. you have a higher compression engine for some reason.. :)

any loose sleeves.. pull em up a bit and clean with acetone.. very well.. apply a 1' bead of loctite sleeve retainer or simialr product and get them back in.. don't stop while driving in as it sets up anerobically. ( no smoke breaks during re-seating )
