engine smoking

Started my 8N front mount and it began smoking out of the breather cap and started knocking, not real loud, but loud enough. What is the likely cause?

Heres the deal, it is NORMAL for the breather cap to "smoke" (actually water vapor being condensed by cooler air) and with heighten awareness caused by the smoke suddenly yer ears hear knocking that is normal and usually ignored.

While knocking can be serious (check yer oil pressure and oil level) as described does NOT constitute a "panic". Continued LOUD knocking is reason to "worry" .......putt'chur earmuffs on, Dell the deeef

I know, in this situation, the smoke and knocking are not normal. (I've had the old girl for 34 years)

Hey Dell--I'm just saying in all those years I never had the smoking or the knock, neither are normal for the old girl and I'm just wondering how I should approach troubleshooting as to what is wrong.

Jim........look at yer oil pressure gauge.......Dell

could have broke a ring, can you check compression to see. will usually let you know where your trouble may be coming from. the smoke could be blowby, wheras a stuck valve usually doesn't cause blowby---just my .02
