engine stalls

I have an old Oliver tractor that has a problem. After starting when I start to let out the clutch with the shifter in neutrual my motor boggs and stalls. I would like to know where to start looking for remidy.

OK, its a 1850. Gas or diesel? Will the rear wheels turn?( pull it or jack up one side and try to turn wheel) Does the gear shift move thru the normal gear positions? ( stuck in 2 gears) Does the clutch feel normal? With the transmission in neutral, it should roll unless something is blocked in transmission or rear end. How cold is it there? ( water in the rear end froze?)Give us some more info to go by. Chris

It's a diesel, gear shift moves through all the gears. Not that cold here. It's like trying to take off with emergency brake on. But shifter is in neutrual. Runs as long as the clutch is in, as soon as I start to let the clutch out the motor boggs and dies.

When did you use it last? Everything work OK then? I think you should jack up one side and try to turn rear wheel or pull it in neutral to see if wheels turn. Was it parked for a long time with the brakes locked on? Could be brakes sticking. If the wheels turn with the clutch depressed and lock up when released, I'd check gear shift lever first for wear (might be stuck in 2 gears). Have you checked the oil level? If it's been run very low or dry, probably something locked up inside. It's time for a wiser person than me to jump in here. Chris

billy, its a good posibility the trans input shaft is seized from lack of oil. i think these tractors have a oil pump in the trans. i''m no exoert here. just my thoughts, chuck

I think Super99's on the right track. Loosen the 3 bolts that hold the cover on the brake housings on each side. You won't have to take them all the way out, just back them off a half inch or so on each side. You might have to rock it back and forth from forward to reverse a few times.

Brakes dont matter if you cant let clutch out.My guess would be gear on input shaft seized. Also check coupler chain. Had 1600 once backed up to a wagon, hooked on got back on and couldnt move. Link on chain started to come apart and wedged so it would stall tractor when let clutch out. Prolly wouldn't happen again in 100 years.

Pulling the hydra power in to underdrive and turning it would do the same thing wouldn't it,without taking the chain off?
