I pull an unstyled A and am wondering if anyone has tried getting an exhaust temp (by putting a probe in the exhaust pipe just past the manifold) and if so, is there any benefit to fine tuning the carb this way as far as finding a optimum temp, rich vs lean?? I understand that this is more than likely an idea that probably works on smaller motors, just wondering if anyone has tried this and had any positive results.

Why not use a dyno to set carb for max horsepower?

I agree with 1855, the dyno will give you the real numbers power wise under a load, which is what you really want. Temperature in the exhaust will not tell you how to make maximum horsepower, that's what the dyno is for.

I Disagree to an extent. Exhaust temp can be used for tuning. You dont really want to pass 1300dF for an extended period. You want to start with timing with fuel fairly rich and see how it acts; too slow will run hotter. As you advance timing EGT should come down well below 1300 under load. You can then start to lean it back until EGT comes back up to 12-1300 under load. While it is not as good as a dyno or WB02, it will get you real close and will tell you if the tune is way off.
