F-20 overdrive

Picked up one of these overdrive units over the weekend. While the one pictured is not mine it is identical (I swiped the picture from this forum.) Mine appears mostly complete and in fair shape. What seems to be missing is the proper input shaft joint (which I think is more or less the same as an original but shortened to make room for the drive gear.) Also missing is the operator lever.

Does anyone have a picture of the operator lever and/or a picture of the complete unit installed and working on a tractor?

Hello Chris, I recognize that picture as being one that I posted. I have not put that one onto the tractor yet but I will look closer and see if I can get you better pictures. Have Bennett units mounted in tractor and I will get a picture of that also in the next couple of days. Mike

Yes, that was yours. It was the clearest and only other picture I could find of a Bennett overdrive. I picked up the very same unit, minus the operators handle extension.

I believe the overdrive to be a SnoCo. It was posted on here years ago by someone else. I also have a couple tractors with those foot brake conversion

That's instructive if somewhat difficult to read. Now, I just want to see the operator lever as installed on the tractor. To understand where it is routed, where it rests.

Got the Snowco gearbox nstalled on the 39 F20. Missing the operator's lever but I'll figure something out for that. Also, had to modify a spare transmission yoke to work (needed to be shorter by the width of the big gear on the lower shaft.) Another issue is the upper bearing cap I removed also served to capture the pinion shaft bearing. Without it that shaft would thrust forward from the ring gear. So, I found bearing shims to set under the back plate and take up the space. Finally, the upper shaft had to be drilled and tapped for a retainer bolt. Not able to take it for a spin just yet because I have the clutch out for service.

Just a minor picking point: I believe that is technically a road gear and not an overdrive. Overdrive (and they were available) provide a second higher speed ratio in all 4 gears. Your road gear requires that you put the main transmission in neutral and then engage the road gear. Overdrives have a second ratio in every regular gear position. You still use the main trans shift lever to select the desired gear. Not a big deal, but a minor point to an old engineer.

If you want fast, get a fast 4th F20 with the 7mph gear and throw a heisler OD in front of it. It'll scoot fast enough to make your butt pucker.......
