F 40 Yellow HC

Took a trip yesterday to Chickasha-Kiowa-Comanche Reservation at Ninnekah, OK and this followed me back to Texas. It has a nice(lol) School Bus Yellow paint job. It didn't have any propane, so will have to hear it run in a few days. I was told it runs good. Bought it for $800. Serial # CSM 3474. Does the C stand for Crop since it a High Crop? How many were factory propane? This is factory since it has year mfg. 1956 stamped on tank. I'm just about finished with a 56 F40 serial # GSM 1771. My new yellow 40 will be my next project!

the C stands for high clearance/high arch. The LP tractor should have CBM for the prefix letters according to the FENA web site.

I guess you did OK, you didn't go to the cleaners too bad.... since the back rims are worth about 800, and the tires about another 800.... is the tank a special item? Can you adapt a modern one under the hood and still look good? Would the original tank be refillable 'legally' anyway? My guess they didn't make 3 or 400 like this... and yours is super nice... congradulations and well done!!!!

Local Propane Co will fill tank and if there is problem with filler valves or gauges they will replace everthing. Don't know if tank is special, only one I have seen. Tank looks to be OK. Gauges are in top of tank.

You have the 1st LP 40 I have ever seen. Dad has a MH 44 LP and MF 65 HI Clearence LP, brother has IH 350 and 450 LP tractors, I have a Cockshutt 30 reversed loader that is converted to LP. Best way to get a gas engine to behave like a diesel is LP gas, but will use more since BTU per gallon is less than gas or diesel.

Would you please verify the letters on the two F40"s?

There seems something a little amis.

The standard letter order is Chassie, Fuel, Transmission.

Thus, I would suspect the "56 SN to start with SGM. i.e. standard low Chassie, Gasoline, Multi-stage clutch (2-stage).

CSM does not make since to me. The C would be for high-clearance not Row-crop. The high clearance was for the 4-wheel con figuration. There were two row crop configs... R for 2 wheel front row crops, and T for single wheel front.

The Fuel is what is throughing me. S was not used here it was used as a chassie type. The L.P. config would have use the letter B.

There were no F-40 propane tractors built at the factory. There was an outfit in the southern part of the US that did custom modifications. I know of three or four of them. The date on the tank is not determinative as to whether or not it was factory-built. There was a F-45 on the MHF drawing boards that was never built. It became the propane version of the MF 50 in 1958. Nevertheless, the fact that you have an operating propane F-40 makes your tractor very rare.
