fan direction

I have a 41 9N. Neighbor was over yesterday and walked in front of it while it was running. Said my fan was bassackwards as it was blowing towards the front. He not the brightest bulb in the box but neither am I. Could he be right?

The forward blowing fan is used in applications where heavy chaff or dirt pulled through the radiator can clog it up thus causing overheating. The forward blowing fan helps prevent this. Don't ask how I know.

My 9N is a 41 model with a pusher, 6 blades.
Had an "Old Timer" tell me that these were also used on front end loader types to blow flames away from the front of the tractor when pushing brush and such up on a burning fire. Makes sense,
of course a lot of things on these old tractors make sense.
Good Luck, jackie

Many early new N's came new with pusher fans, they 4 blade. There always was an optional pusher fan for all N's. some were 4 blade and some were 6.

I have seen a few discussions here concerning pushing and pulling the air through the radiator. I don't mind the air blowing on me in the summer but it's pretty cold plowing in the winter. Other than that I don't see how the radiator would mind either way.

Tell your dim-bulb neighbor that you did that on purpose and you now have a thrust-reverser on the tractor. Slows you down and saves on the brakes. Works on aircraft.

It's just an optional pusher fan like the others said. I had a 2N with one on it for a while. They work just fine.

OK thanks, I am after all, the guy who tried changing points on the front mount with the dist. on the tractor, filled the rad. to the top and thought I overheated, and put 30# in my rears

The very first 9Ns came with 4 blade pusher fans. As has been said - the radiator does not care.

(quoted from post at 22:16:04 11/25/08) Just turn your fan bassackwards

I think we may need to smoke that one over...

With plenty of time on our hands.

It might be eaiser to crank the engine backwards.

[Dunk

I am trying your turkey recipe. If it works I will tell you how to reverse the fan.
I may be drunk

When you get your fan bolted on in reverse, be sure & let us know how it worked for you.

I want one--pusher fan--where can I get one? Thanks
My 49 didn't have a shroud so I never noticed it much but the one I use now does & it will freeze you out!

At least we are riding in the same boat...

I must have a "PUSHER FAN"!!!!!
When the pin went out on my 2N front axle.....The fan went crazy and pushed a big chunk right out of the lower radiator hose!!!

For 45+ years that my Dad had owned his 2N he always keeps a stick on the tractor with him when hogging broom sage and such on his place. He uses the stick to rake the junk off of the front of the radiator as needed to keep it from stopping the air flow. If the pusher is as effective, they should all be pushers in my opinion..

Do you think it might just clog the other side where it is more difficult to clean off? Just thinking out loud.

How about blows warm air on you in winter (winter sucker fan) and hot air away from you in summer (summer pusher fan)?

How could it be more difficult, when it is easier to spray a garden hose from the front?

(quoted from post at 23:28:01 11/25/08) Guess it depends on whether you have a garden hose out on the back 40 or not.

I don't have the air compressor out there either.

You toting a brush?

Does that werk?

LMAO!!!!!

You go brother!!!!

Back when I was hanging out with the funny girls, they had some kind of sayin about the likety split.

I guess I should open up and admit how I stupidly tried to wash the chaff out of my radiator with the hose while the engine was still hot.... It quit running, of course. The water cracked the case on the front-mount coil. (Moral: don't spray cold water on hot coil).

On another thought...... The sucker-fan keeps blowin' hot air on the coil which cannot do it any good for longevity. I'd think a pusher fan, especially in summer, would be a good thing. Sucker fan in winter.

Your neighbor could be right. Tho the tractor
came with a 4 blade, the parts book shows a 6
blade puller or a 6 blade pusher. The 6 blade
puller was for torrid zones and I don't remember
the purpose of the pusher, tho I did see a couple
in my years with Ford tractors. Chuck

I've seen pusher fans for sale in 4 & 6 blade. Seems to ma that it makes sense for Florida summers where I don't appreciate all that heat blowing back on my legs.
I've heard the argument that it keeps debris out of the radiator, but I'm not sure how that'd work... Wouldn't it be just as likely to suck it up from behind as from the front?
If I ever see one cheep I'll probably try it just to see if it makes for cooler seat time in the summer.

My 41 9 has a 6 blade pusher fan, love it. In the winter when I start it the cold air is directed away from me. My Jubilee on the other hand has a puller fan, BIG difference in winter, not so much in summer.
