What has been your experience with or using a professional farm manager? Should I be alert for anything.

I can touch on this vagley: 1. make sure they are exsperienced in your farm/area/operation!! 2. usually only comes in to play if it is a sizable operation.

Why would I hire someone to lose the same or more money than I can!

Depends on how the farm is rented.

I assume you are the owner.

If it is cash rent why do you need a farm manager to collect the check and take his 10%.

If it is share rent, and you don't trust your tenant, then get a different tenant.

I cant say much about farm managers. But bankers and county agents I can rant on. Dad gave me a heads up on bankers and I changed banks asap. Talked to county agent about drainage and then found out he had some farmland down stream of mine. The banker would loan you money and hope you couldnt pay it back so he could foreclose on the farm.

I second what IaGary said, no use giving them 10% to collect the check. Take bids and pick the one you want. Have seen deals where the farm manager had his own axe to grind if you know what I mean, get your fertilizer where he says ,so and so rents the farm no matter who bids the most, and so on. Lee
