Farmall 130 & 140 starters

Been working on my son's new to him Farmall 130. When he bought it, the previous owner had already converted it over to a 12v system. We had trouble with the original starter messing up the bendix drive on it, and had it rebuilt at the local starter alternator shop. The last visit we were told that he had done all he could to the original starter as more of it was so rusted that it was impossible to disassemble it any further than the bendix. Therefore we sourced another original 6v Delco Remy to install. With this replacement starter, it struggles to spin the engine over, along with what I think is excessive arcing and some smoke coming from the brush area. All wiring connections are tight and bright. To somewhat compound the issue, this tractor has Fire Crater pistons in it and has high compression, so some starter bucking is involved. It's hard to hand crank also. Looking through my parts book I see IH lists 2 different starter part numbers for the factory 12v system like would be on a 140. There is a below serial number break at 63260 I believe, and above break number of 63261 till end of production. Question is will either one of these part numbers for a true 12v starter work on a 130 with the same C-123 engine.....if so I presume the early serial number break number is the one to try to find ?? My train of thought is to maybe change out from the 6v starter to the updated 12v which I think has an improved bendix drive to help eliminate destruction, along with it hopefully being more robust to handle the 12v and compression factor going on. Thoughts and suggestions please . Sorry for being long winded.

A used starter?Take that starter to the rebuilder and have him rebuild it.Sparks and smoke indicates that the starter is toast.A fresh starter will no trouble spinning your engine.

Used starters are a roll of the dice. Bet if you pull it apart the commutator will look like a beaver has been gnawing on it, and the brushes will be trashed.
The issue that I am somewhat undecided on, is will it be worth the expense to go 12v on another starter versus rebuilding this 6v one. There are different drives between the two, and the local starter shop is saying that the needed components to convert a 6v drive system to 12v is out of stock. A main problem is the bendix drive was demolished in short order after the original rebuild and I foresee it being an ongoing issue. Kinda ironic though that the rest of the 1 row Farmalls that we have and been converted to 12v has never given a moments trouble with the starters. But they don't have Fire Craters in 'em either.
