Farmall 1566 Starter Trouble

I noticed when I lost my inner duly that I had some smoke coming from my starter....I think it was just so hot it was burning the grease residue which had been accumulating on it...seems like I heard a shimmy vibration coming from it too while the engine was running...

Anyhow - turned off the tractor and tried to start it and it started right up...

But the next day...yep it just spins and sping with a gear bumping sound and doesn't crank the engine...after 15 minutes or so I got it started...luckily.

Can a person wack the starter with a hammer to get it started like in a car?

Whats involved with replacing it??? are there a bunch a shims I'll have to tune to ensure the started engages/disengages?

And for anyone reading my prev post...and one know an aftermarket spot to buy one (assuming I need to)because after paying 800.00 for a pair a wedges, Im broke and I'd guess a starter to be around 30,000.00 comparatively...

That is the way to sell tractors. I have a friend that bought a $45,000 truck because he couldn't afford a $600 brake job.

Any good auto electric shop should be able to fix it for you for far less than CaseIH will want.

Tom If you had called me I could have got them for far less through after market brand new.
We have a set we bought over a year ago and no problems so far.

Just three bolts holding the starter in, I have three IH's and none of them had shims. Just bolt off and bolt on. Cheapest way out is just get one from the salvage yard, I think they used the same starter all the way from 806-1586. Most salvage yards have a 30 day return policy, so if it doesnt sound right take it back.

Tanker's idea sounds pretty good. Those old starters are far from throw-aways. Do you think you can tackle the rebuld yourself? It's not rocket science. If you don't feel comfortable with it, it's worth driving a ways to have yours rebuilt. Maybe you can get get lucky and find a CIH dealer that still rebuilds them. The one thing I don't like about the starters on those older IH's is the location. Jim

I appreciate that...but...I had a guy up in the area on another job that had the tools to help me (fluid pump and one inch impact wrench...we had the outter off and inner pumped (200 gallons of fluid in tanks when we ran into our problems...

I would have likely cost me the same as well as days of down time to send him home, wait for aftermarket and bring him back up...he's an hour away round trip...

Im pretty good at fixin stuff but I don't have the time...I'm in the middle of a rippin job and have had 2 weeks of rain already, a tire a shim set setback and now this...I am sure a bolt off and bolt on is all time we'll have...I'm working around fields where I'm already gonna have allot of bow hunters ------ off at me for rippin while their trying to hunt their week of rut in Nov...by the time all thats done...gonna probably freeze if my luck continues....
