Farmall 340 ???s

I just came across a Farmall 340. It may be worth the money I guess depending on what is wrong with it.

All I know about a 340 I just read on external_link, so, I was hoping if anyone here had any experience with one you could tell me the good, bad, ugly, what to particularly look for , etc.

Grew up with Farmalls of several models, but never even saw a 340

I guess I should add it is a tricycle front end row crop model, gas engine.

Thanks

Imagine a 300U or 350U then change out the 350 series engine and put in a 135cid engine derived from the SC line. Rev the engine a little higher, and tune it for about as much power as an SH. (or there about's). They are great small tractors with few faults. Heavy Tillage on hundreds of acres is not their purpose in life. If it has had a loader on it for many years it might have steering issues.
The trans and differential are overly strong for the tractor because of the origin being 350, so they are not stressed. If it runs well for a couple of hours testing it. (really the only way to assure it is sound) and will do what you need, buy it. Jim

Not to bad a little tractor. If I where to compare them I would say a C or Super C that was jazzed up. Have one sitting in the hay field right now with a sickle mower on its tail. So yep not to bad a small chore tractor for things like cutting or raking hey and that type of thing

Bobby, since I have a Farmall 240 I will share on what I have found with the Farmall 340 for what it may be worth. The 340 has the later features like live PTO and a Torque Amplifier which were not offered on the 240 model. I really like my 240 which is like a more powerful Super C. What I have found to be a problem with these two models (240 & 340) is since they were made in small numbers for a Farmall tractor model most parts are difficult to find unless they were used on other IHC models. Only around 3000 Farmall 240's were made and slightly more then twice that for the Farmall 340 model. They were also made in the utility International model which added to the total quantity but there are several differences between the row crop and utility models. There are few reproduction or still in production parts unique to these models. Since the 340 models (Farmall and International) were made in numbers around twice of those for the 240 parts are somewhat easier to find but certainly not like the letter series tractors. I have a friend who has a Farmall 340 and talked to him the other day and he indicated he was very happy with his tractor since he obtained it a couple of years ago. He thought it was a good all around type tractor for his farming operations which are mainly doing the hay and pasture trimming things. Finding replacement unique parts for the 340 when needed will be your biggest challenge but certainly possibile with some time and effort. Good luck with your tractor and I think one may be in my plans at some point after I get the 240 finished up, Hal.

I don't think there is a whole lot in common between the 240 and 340. 240 is next series after the C, SC, 200, and 230. The 340 had no predesesor. Bigger engine including a diesel, 5 spd or 5 spd w/ TA, IPTO... just a lot more tractor even though it wasn't much bigger.

Sorry for any confusion, I wasn't trying to say the two models were common in any way just the fact that parts are difficult to find for a 240 and most likely it will be the same situation for a 340 since they were both produced in very limited numbers during the same era. There is hardly any commonality between the two tractors and as you note they are certainly totally different tractors which I thought was a given. Hope this clarifies my earlier response, Hal.
