Farmall 350 TA adjustment

New to me 350 I picked up the other day seems to need some adjustment on the TA. The tractor is in very good shape and doesn't seem to have a lot of use. The TA will shift but slips under a load. I tried to adjust it per the book but I don't believe i got it right, better but still slips. This is my first time trying to adjust a TA and seemed a little confusing to me. I tried to search the site but did see anything, I'm sure its been covered. Thank you in advance

Does it slip with TA handle forward or pulled back. If it slips with handle pulled
back, low speed then adjusting will not help. Ramp and roller assy.is bad.

When you say slips, there are three possibilities: one is slipping of the master clutch. Another is just plain stopping forward movement all
together. Another is the TA clutch slipping when in direct (handle forward).

A slipping master clutch---- there should be 1.25 inches of free play between the platform (what the seat bolts to) and the clutch pedal
(measured where the pedal touches the platform when your foot is not on the pedal)when hand pressure is used to push on the pedal until
resistance is felt on your hand. This spec. is set by adjusting the master clutch linkage shorter or longer (it is the lower link attached to
the front actuating lever). If the free play is set, the master clutch will grip as well as it can. If it is worn, the tractor will do the
following: putting it in high gear, TA forward, and near full throttle, letting the clutch out rapidly should kill the engine. If it doesn't
stall the engine, I suspect a worn master clutch. Farmalls need to have the clutch slipped on purpose to start in road gear, or with a TA back,
minor slipping on purpose. If the engine stalls the master clutch is probably OK, or OK enough to not blame!

If the tractor stops moving, or doesn't move when the lever is pulled back, the Sprag clutch (one way clutch) is bad. this cannot be fixed by
adjustment, it must be taken apart in a double split to get to the rear of the TA gear set where it enters the transmission.

The third possibility is the TA front clutch is worn. This small clutch causes the whole TA gear set to turn with the engine. If it is worn
the tractor will act like it has a 2 speed automatic transmission. (It doesn't). Starting out in road gear (on the road) with the TA ahead, the
tractor will start forward and get to about 10 mph , then kinda shift into a higher gear, reaching about 18. This repair could be because of
adjustment. The pedal should move about 40% of its travel before the tractor stops moving if the free play is correct. A little farther down
with the pedal should start releasing the TA direct clutch. (shorter rod above the one mentioned above) if it releases the TA clutch early, or
even way early, it can cause the TA to slip from direct to reduction. If it is not adjusted to that point, but much farther in the pedal travel
it may cause the tractor to bind in gear making shifting difficult if going up hill, or stopping when pulling something. Jim

Man great explanation! The tractor with no load leaver pulled back will drive, as soon as it gets a load stops moving and makes a growling sound

TA one way clutch, it can be driven like a 5 speed (TA forward) for a long long time. But the TA is a great feature, and makes the tractor way
more flexible. I have many hours on 350s (F and Utility as well as F300 F400 and others). A My 350U TA is still good from the factory!! They
should be shifted rapidly from direct into reduction and rapidly from reduction into direct. Were it mine, I would install a Hi-Capacity brand
TA kit. Jim

My 686 has the original TA with 46xx hours and it works great. The 350 is a low hour machine but I guess wasnt used or taken care of Ill add replacement to the fix it one day list Thank you!

Right after I bought my 300, I wanted to change all the fluids and such for a brand new start. I talked to one of the techs at the dealership where I bought it said to use 80-90W oil. WRONG!!! I am sure the sprag clutch was worn before I got the tractor, but one fall day I was pulling some big tree branches up a hill using the TA to dispose of them. Half way up the tractor stopped moving and there a whirring type of noise from the transmission area. Needless to say I finished off the clutch and $2000 dollars later with a new TA it was back and running. Ever since I only use HyTran for the transmission fluid!!!!
