farmall 450 shifter

i have a farmall 450. on the transmission cover the shifter sits to the left side ,and there is a cover plate that looks like it could accept the shifter on the right side . what was the purpose of this . can anyone help

That plate is what you remove to fill transmission and rear end of tractor.

That was where the shifter was when the tractor was used as a reverse operated cotton picker

You learn something every day. The manuals for the 450 tractor don't show moving it over there all it says that is taken off to fill trans. and rear end.

Both answers are correct. But although they have the cast in bosses on the underside for the shift rail guides, bolt holes and poppet springs very few are drilled or tapped on that side. Still have to use different shift forks when moved to that side.
