Farmall 450

Started up my Farmall 450 today to let it run awhile and charge the battery up etc. Hadn"t been started in about a month and we"ve had some really wide temperature swings and alot of snow and rain. Tractor started right up but seemed to be running a little rough and was periodically making a pretty loud popping noise. Couldn"t tell exactly where it was coming from but eventually thought it might have been from the air intake and associated with it kind of running a little rough. It sounded like it was was maybe backfireing or something. Tractor was running like a top last time I ran it and I just replaced all the wiring and put in all new distributor cap, rotor, points, plugs and wires right before I ran it last.
Do you think I might of somehow got a little condensation or water in the gas tank and it"s backfireing????? Maybe try a can of heat??? Any other thoughts???

You should be ableto see water in fuel bowl if it has some condensation,If your carb has a fuel drain on it wouldn't hurt to drain carb and refill it I would check distributor cap for signs of moisture even though you said it was new, have purchased plenty of new stuff that was junk, if cap is damp dry it out then try some spray on ignition sealer , works pretty good sometimes

I'd go with LN on the moisture in the dist. cap. Went to start the tractor Wednesday & it backfired & ran rough. Pulled the cap, & sure enough--moisture in the cap. Got the hair dryer & heated up the cap--bingo-- worked like new. This is one of the unanswerable questions--how does moisture get in a distributor cap overnight?? Couple of others are--Where does grease disappear to when you can't see it pumped out of a bearing? And--Why do carburetors which haven't leaked in 20 years run over just after your new paint job is finished?

Sounds like a stiking valve...let it run about 1/4th throtle for a while......let the rocker arm peck on it for a while......try a valve treatment mixed in the gas tank....
