Farmall 504 ta

I'm working on a farmall 504. The ta pressure plate throw out bearing went out. I'm guessing it wasn't adjusted in years. I've worked on other tas. Normally when you get the engine pulled away you can pull the PTO and drive shaft out the front. On this one the it seems like the lower PTO gear needs to be removed first. The gear fits between two bearings. Do I just need to give it a little more force or is there something else I'm missing?

Rear bearing on pto drive shaft may not clear lower gear but shaft should come out and then main clutch shaft out to replace release bearing. If you don't have a slide hammer, screw a long 3/8 coarse thread bolt in end of clutch shaft with something heavy to slide and bring both shafts out.

Yup, that's what happened when IH raised the RPMs on the engines to get the HP from revs rather than torque. The gear ratio from the engine to the PTO changed, necessitating a larger driven gear on the IPTO shaft.

It has to come out to get at the TA clutch, which means pulling the IPTO shaft back out of the gear and allowing the gear to drop out. I think the PTO unit may need to come out first to move the IPTO drive shaft. Been a few years since Dad did it on the 656.
