Farmall 504

I asked y'all about a Farmall 504 Diesel a few days ago, Long story short, I bought the tractor. It's a 1964, so I didn't expect not to have to do some work on it.

First off, it's missin' one piece of sheet metal. As you can see from the photo, it's the piece that goes under the steering column, below the instrument panel and bolts to the sides. Any ideas where I'd find this piece of sheet metal. Also I need the gauges. None work. Need tach. Where do I find gauges and tach? Glow plugs don't work, I have to start the engine with starting fluid.

I need all manuals that are available. From reading posts on YT, some say that some manuals are not what they should be. I don't remember the names, maybe JEN something. I would appreciate a reccomendation on manuals and where to find them.

3 point hitch is a little slow. Where do I check hydraulic fluid, add hydraulic fluid, and what hydraulic fluid should I use? I've looked the tractor over pretty good, the only dipstick I can find is for the engine oil.

Wild Bill, I don't know about the sheet maetal, but the other things are available new from IH. I am not real familur with the 504, but there should be a speed control valve for the lift. Maybe a knob under the seat. It should use HY-TRAN fluid or a good equivalent. The specs will be on the bucket that tranny fluid comes in. Brad Marshall can get all the parts and manuals you need and ship them right to you. Call 1-888-824-0544. He is a great guy and an authorized IH parts man. Will beat most anyones prices.
 
Hydraulic oil filler hole is on the floor near where your left foot would be. I'd drain the oil out into a couple of clean buckets. If it looks good, put it back in with enough more to get it up to capacity.

You should be able to find the sheet metal by contacting places that part old tractors out. Several sellers on ebay part out tractors too.
 
Regarding the hydraulics: My 504 with loader just acted like the pump was weak- one of the cylinders on the loader leaked a little, so I'd watch the level closely. There's a pipe plug on the left side of the transmission housing, about halfway down, that sure looked like a level plug (ie, fill til fluid comes out)- it even had been drilled and tapped with a 1/4 inch bolt, for easy checking. I finally broke down and got another pump, and when I took the old one out, got to looking and found that if the hydraulic oil level was at the level of the plug, it was just barely high enough to get into the pump! So apparently the pump was just starving for oil. I took some measurements, and now fill it to 8 inches below the filler on top of the tranny, and it works like a champ. So that plug on the side is not the fill level plug.
