Farmall 560 gas problem

My problems always seem to happen at the worst possible times. My 560 quit running and wouldn't start again a couple of evenings ago. It was getting dark and I was about to head home but I ended up leaving it in the field overnight and walked home. It snowed about a foot overnight! Now the tractor is not in my machine shed but is out in the cold covered with snow! I need to use it now since it has chains and a snow bucket on the loader which I use to clean snow.

I have found that there is now fuel getting into the sediment bowl from the gas tank. I am assuming the line is plugged above the sediment bowl since there is half a tank of fuel. I noticed that there is no filter or strainer of any kind at the sediment bowl.

If the tractor was in my shed I would try to blow the line out with the air hose. I could use some advice on what I should do since the tractor is out in the field. I do not have another tractor to pull it home so I need to get it running where it is. Also, should there be a strainer or filter in the sediment bowl and would I get that at my local IH dealer? Working on a tractor in freezing weather is one of my least favorite things. If I did not need the tractor I would be temped to wait until spring!

I meant there is "no" fuel getting into the sediment bowl, not "now" fuel! I should have proof read it. Sorry!

fill portable air tank and blow air back through line into tank, that should clear it long enough to get in your building to pull tank and clean it.

First, after you get it home, drain all the fuel out. Then remove the sediment assembly form the tank. Inspect it to make sure it not full of 'crap'.Just blowng it out just puts that crap back into the tank to bother you later..Look in the tank for rust, dirt or other. There is a screened stand pipe available. Stiener carries them. Maybe these guys(YT) does too. About 8 bucks. They work.after reassembly put an inline filter imediately following the sediment bowl. Put in a gallon of gas and check flow. Starting at the carb drain, moveing back till you get to the sediment bowl. Dont neglect the inlet screen at the carb. Also, check the gas cap. If the vent hole is plugged it will create a vacume in the tank, preventing gas from flowing, thereby stalling the engine. It helps to keep the tank full as a low nearly empty tank tends to move the crap into the outlet plugging it faster.

Well personally i hate when this happens when it is COLD and snowy . COLD gas running down your arm on a cold day sucks . SOOOOOOOOOooo here is what ya need to do . Turn off the fuel remove the fuel line at the carb get your self about four or five feet of 5/16 gas line and slide it over the fuel line and get it up above the tank then turn on the gas while holding it up and make sure you are above the tank level and BLOW hard . Ya got a twig , dirt, old rag, a bug or only god knows what stuck in the sediment bowl inlet , Now lower the line and see if you have flow , if yes then turn off the gas rehook the line drive the tractor back and drain the tank and yes you can blow out the tank with compressed air and look and see what is floating around in there i have done this many times . Then replace the sediment bowl with a NEW one with the screen in the Bowl not the one in the inlet . Massey combines have that and it is a biggy and has given me more head aches over the years when they plug off then if it would have let the fines just come down and plugged the screen in the bowl , I hate playen little Dutch boy out in the field with one finger plugging the bottom of a tank with fifty or 75 gallons of diesel in it while tryen to clean off the intank screen with one hand and taking a second bath in fuel while getting it back in.

After you do what the Tractor Vet said, when you get a new sediment bowl cut a 2" piece of copper tubing that fits in the top so you are not sucking off the bottom of the tank.

If you do as i say then there will be no need for a Stand pipe as whatg the new sediment bowl will give you it will not become a bottom sucker as it will stick up and inch or so. And IF you use good CLEAN gas and NOT dump gas in out of five gallon cans like most Hobby guys do but get it out of a tank that is set a couple inches high on the outlet side and keep the tank FULL on the tractor your water problems and just problems will be almost nothing and what little does make it's way in will be in the bottom of the sediment bowl . Als so heres a News flash always have spare new sediment bowl gkst's on hand and replace the gskt with EACH BOWL cleaning and NEVER ever tighten the bowl with anything more then two fingers OR you will warp it .
