farmall A 3 BRUSH GENERATOR.

Well having trouble with my generator on my A tractor, i see itsa a 3 brush generator, i vave a few 2 brush generators from 50's autos, and vlotage regs too, wouls these be an acceptable replacement....or just upgrade to a 12 volt alternator..

You need to decide on changing to a different generator and regulator set up or converting to a 12 volt neg ground alternator. Asking that here is going to get you answers for both ways as being the best way. It is a personal choice as I see it. Either will work if done correctly.

What do you want to do?

i've a few 2 brush gennies and a few 6 volt regs for them, just wondering about wiring it in, the bat to b, a to armature and f field.

You can search the web for generator wiring diagrams, or the wiring diagram for a later Farmall that used a two brush generator with regulator. You need to know if the generator is an A or B system to get the right drawing and the regulator needs to match, A or B.

I feel like we had this discussion on a different forum 😲. At this point only you can decide what you want to do with your tractor 😔

He got tons of good advice on Facebook. This has been ongoing for a couple months 😔.. crazy side note.......there are actually intelligent people who know what they are talking about in most of the Facebook Farmall groups 😉

If the tractor is otherwise still original 6 volt, decide first whether originality matters to you. Swapping in one of the old 2-brush generators may turn into more work than it looks if the regulator, mounting and pulley don't match what the tractor needs. For a working tractor where originality isn't important, the 12 volt alternator conversion seems like the simpler long-term path. If you're trying to keep it looking period correct, you could repair the original 3-brush setup instead of adapting a random automotive generator. Either way pick the system first, then match all the pieces to it instead of mixing parts until it charges.
