Farmall A transmission problem

I have a Farmall A that has a problem with 2nd gear and reverse. Anyone have info on this? What is involved in getting to these gears to inspect and replace?
Any other items if I am in that far that should be replaced?
Copy of parts diagram would be great.
Thanks Ty
:)

Have you lifted the top off the tranny for an initial inspection?
Could see something obvious to start.

I have been into several of these transmissions and I may be able to give you some pointers, but you say there is a problem with reverse and second gear. What kind of problem? It seems odd to have a problem with reverse and second, maybe reverse
and first. But again, what problems are you having so myself or someone else on here may have some pointers for you.

The owner has asked me to help him fix it.
He said it makes noise in 2nd and reverse. I think like a clunk kind've noise. But other gears are fine.

I am trying to get a bit of background before I tell him I will help him on it.

Someone else asked about taking the cover off to inspect from the top. I am not sure how the A is set up.
We do not have a manual to look at.

Any info on Farmall A transmission would be helpful.
Thanks Ty

Here's a look inside an AV, which is similar.
Pulling the cover is no problem, remove the top bolts.
There is a gasket that may need replacing afterward.
Look for damaged gears.

So just what is the problem what does it do or not do. Are you sure its the tranny. Some hear noises then find out its a loose wheel or weight.

Thanks to the link to the pics

I will look it over and be sure it is not something else making the noise. And then take the cover off and inspect.

Thanks again for the posts guys....Ty :!: :!:

First thing I would do is let the owner know that you need a manual to work on the tractor.

As others have mentioned checking the gears is easy, just take the entire shifting lever cover off.

If you need to change gears due to damage, that is an entirely different story. The complete transmission will need to be removed so that the transmission shafts can be taken out. The later Farmall transmissions come apart good, the earlier ones are a fight. To get the gear clusters out of one of them, can remember which, a pin needs to be ground off and driven our of a gear to remove the shaft.

Depending on how fast you are, it could take 6-8 hours just to remove all of the components to have the transmission out and on a table. Plus however long it will take to source gears, disassemble the transmission and reinstall in the tractor.

24 hours of work would be my guess. Not sure what your hourly rate is, but might be worth discussing this with the customer.

FYI I have a good supply of Farmall A and Super A gears in stock.
