Hi all,

I bought a Farmall tractor a few months back and am wondering if it is an A - I can't find the serial number under the seat, is it the number by the gear stick I have pictured?

We have finally got it running!

How is the top of the magneto meant to be mounted?

Thanks for your time!
Samuel

No, that's a casting number/part number.

Yes, it is an A, no that isn't the serial number.

The serial number would be stamped on a plate that is riveted to the inside of the left hand seat support, if it is still on the tractor, I couldn't tell from the picture.

If it is not there, the engine serial number may be the same as long as the block has not been replaced. It is stamped on the raised boss below #1 sparkplug, kind of behind the magneto as shown in the picture above.

the top mount for an A is a longer bolt and a 90 degree angle bracket. The bracket is about 1/2 inch wide ,one leg (with hole) about 1/2 inch long the other leg is about 11/4 long. The bolt and bracket remain fixed but the mag is allowed a little rotational movement to adjust timing

(quoted from post at 13:39:33 07/21/21) you have the wrong mag you need the h-4 for the A

Only ever dealing with my BN I had to do some digging and I see that magneto is a J-4 which from what I see is the one for a Cub not a A or a few others like my BN.

some of the early A's had the serial number plate on the brake petal guard

Curious. Gene, does it make a difference?
Yes it makes a difference. The lag angle in an J4 is much different than in an H4.

Just out of curiosity is the lag more or less?

I could see the difference if too short might make it dangerous to hand crank or damage the electric starter drive. Or if too long make starting very difficult.

J-4 -- 13 degrees
H-4 -- 35 degrees.

J-4 -- 13 degrees
H-4 -- 35 degrees.

That is a difference not sure if enough to cause kick back but if timing was set a little too advanced who knows!

Also I would strongly suggest getting the upper bolt in that mag no matter what you do otherwise.

If you don't have the clamp for the bolt let some one know and I'm sure one of us can post a picture and some dimensions to make one if needed.

I don't know anything about your mag. but you might need a hold down brkt. like this. Also I think your throttle rod springs should be on the order of these on my Super C.
