just bought a farmall b how do you check the oil and the serial numbers are gone how do I find out the year

The oil is checked with the two petcocks on the LHS of the oil pan. If it comes out of the bottom one and not the top (although some up top is probably fine) you're set. For the year, there is a raised boss underneath the #1 spark plug at the top of the block. This will have a serial number stamped in it which is probably close enough (although unlikely to be the same unless it's a really early tractor) to the tractor serial number to date it. Alternatively most castings have a casting code that will be two numbers and a letter with what looks like a screw head between them. If you post a selection we can give you an idea when it was built. tractorsam

The oil is checked with the small petcocks on the oil pan. If oil comes out the bottom one, it is OK. If it does not, add until it comes out the top one. (use regular automotive oil (10-30 or 10-40) or diesel oil 15-40. If colder than the hubs of purgatory, use 5-30.
The engine number on the block under #1 plug is the same as the serial # on these tractors. Welcome to the board, and happy tractoring. JimN

Open the petcock on the oil pan. Get the complete # on the flat spot behind the rod going to the gov rite beneath the front spark pulg next to the radiator. It will read FAB++++++ Then at the bottom of the block below the mag or dist whichever you have there could be 2*2*o the 2 means FEB second 2 means 2nd day of FEB THE o is 45. Next letter in the system would be p=46 q=47. You can find a code like this on the tranny above and back of the clutch pedal should be clost to the same code on the engine rite back with what you find and we can tell you more details.

Are the serial numbers really gone or do you not know where to look for them. On the B they are not out in the open and if you don't know where they are you will almost never find them. If they are still there its on the seat mount, if I remember right on the right hand one looking at it from the back. You almost have to stand on your head to see them

I put 10-30 in my A Farmall and when it got warmed up the oil pressure gage jumped all over and scared me to death. I decided to put straight #30 in it and it stopped. I wondered if I was the only guy that this happened to.

well if u dont know how to check the oil on that B im guessing U wont know how to check any farmall u better play it safe & sell that tractor to me ... lol
