Farmall Clutch Adjustment

Thanks to everyone who provided their thoughts as to my clutch adjustment problem before I split the tractor (F544); it appears the remanufactured pressure plate had a bad finger.
Turns out the operator's platform was bent; I have it just about back to where is should be, it is still affecting the travel of the clutch, but is much better. My question
relates to the throw-out bearing. Should there be zero movement of the bearing when the clutch is not engaged? If I look under the tractor while it is running, I can get the
fingers about 1/16 - 1/8" away from the bearing, but it is not quite enough to disengage. A couple more turns on the yoke, and it is fine, but the fingers just barely touch the
bearing. It will turn slightly, and stop, or another half turn on the yoke and it will spin. I can carefully put my finger on it and it completely stops. You can watch/feel
while pulling the pedal down with your hand that there is no actual pressure on the pressure plate springs. It went well, but I don't want to split it again anytime soon. Thanks!

the fingers should be about an 1/8 " away from the release brg. when you adjust free play travel. at wide open throttle the fingers will come in closer contact with the brg. due to centrifugal force. at this point you do not want the brg. turning either.

Rust red is correct. More stroke is needed, as the point the tractor starts to move, and the point the gears can be changed needs to be away from the maximum down position by at least an inch and a half of pedal travel. Cutting away or heating and bending the metal of the platform may be the answer. Jim

The reason the throwout bearing needs to come away from the fingers is, it is not designed to spin all the time. You'll burn through throwout bearings in short order.

That's what the free pedal play is all about. It's proportional to the gap between the throwout bearing and the fingers.
