Farmall Cub Final Drive Housing Problems

I recently bought a 1951 farmall cub. I didn't inspect it fully though, and the previous owner had drilled out the holes that the drawbar attaches to, and welded on some homemade attachments. Obviously, i want to use the drawbar, but i'm not sure how to proceed. Should i buy new final drive housing units, or try to modify the original, but damaged, ones.

The left and right final drives are identical and can be switched from left to right side.If the front holes are in good shape this will put them in back to mount the drawbar.

The idea of switching the final drives side to side is a good one to get the good holes at the front (assuming they are good) to the back so you can use the drawbar. However, if you do this, some implements require the drawbar to be reversed and mounted to the front holes so you would not be able to use those implements. There are several salvage places you can get good used final drives if you want to replace the ones you have. I'd try to avoid the after market new ones that are available in favor of some good used ones. Another option may be to drill out and tap the old holes to the next larger size (3/4 inch) and then use Super A drawbar bolts. That would mean you would also have to modify the drawbar brackets, but I think that could be done without too much problem. Also you might be able to use a Helicoils to repair the existing holes back to the original 5/8 size if the holes are not too badly damaged. However, I'm not sure how well the Helicoil will work in holes where you may need to remove and reinstall the bolts fairly frequently for changing implements and so on.

Thanks for the advice...it seems that the best way to go, since i would like to be able to have the draw bar in both positions, would be to get a good set of housings, and replace mine. Other than ebay, where should I look for some?...I'm in Washington State

check out farmallcub.com ,welth of information on cubs and there are a few people that part out cubs that are beyond repair.Might even be some parts in your area, just need to (free)register and start asking questions over there.

Hey Nate, I don't know where you are at in Washington. If you are in eastern Washington, there is a good salvage yard in Moses Lake, WA. Owner is Doug D'Avis, a really injoyable person to deal with. We(friend and I) was just there today.

Doug had to go to Hospital today to get shoulder worked on, Should be home by the end of week, maybe even home now. I seen couple of Cubs there today.HTH
