If the engine stays at idle when you advance the throttle it COULD have a broken governor spring. My 1948 Farmall cub will not gain speed when I push the lever all the way past notches. When I start to plow it has no power to keep plowing .What would be the problem? Could it be the governor and if it is how would I fix it?
Most likely issues. #1 the governor linkage arms are "froze up" and not moving. #2 the spring on the governor is worn out or broken. #3 timing is way off. #4 carb has blockage, needs cleaning. #5 it needs a good tune up with quality parts. BUT if I was a betting man I would go with #1. Feel free to call or text me. Happy to help. The speed does go up but not enough to plow.If the engine goes up some does that mean the governor may be ok?or could there still be a problem with the governor. If the engine stays at idle when you advance the throttle it COULD have a broken governor spring.
If it DOES rev up when you advance the throttle, then lack power and slow down when a load is put on it, that may well be a fuel flow issue, which includes the sediment bowl and screen, the fuel line, and the carburetor being able to flow enough fuel to carry the load.
If I take the front governor cover off will I be able to see a broken spring or will I need to go further. Most likely issues. #1 the governor linkage arms are "froze up" and not moving. #2 the spring on the governor is worn out or broken. #3 timing is way off. #4 carb has blockage, needs cleaning. #5 it needs a good tune up with quality parts. The governor spring is external, in the linked video you can see it at 3:55, at 6:20 he shows where it is when installed on the tractor. If I take the front governor cover off will I be able to see a broken spring or will I need to go further.
Don't be in too much of a hurry to get deeper into this than you may need to... as you move the throttle lever from idle to maximum you should feel an increasing resistance to movement of the lever IF the linkage and spring are intact. If I take the front governor cover off will I be able to see a broken spring or will I need to go further.
Not cub but Super A. I found the inlet pipe for the air cleaner nearly plugged from oil fumes and dust causing restricted air flow. Another place to check and clean.Air cleaner cup full of dirt restricting air flow?

Some on YouTube says the timing marks on the fly wheel are on the side of the gear facing the magnito to time the governor. Why are the governor timming marks not visible when the governor is remove Please let me know. Thanks for your helpThe governor spring is external, in the linked video you can see it at 3:55, at 6:20 he shows where it is when installed on the tractor.
Cub governor video
By the way what that guy says in the video about the governor causing a carb to “load up” is in error, I just chose the video because it shows the spring. If you are looking for manuals for your Cub let me know I will help you access some.
Correct,if you remove the governor on a cub with a magneto you must get the governor back in the correct place, unfortunately those markings are on the back of the gear and not visible from the governor side. If you remove the magneto, there is a seal between the magneto and governor.....so you still can't see the marks. From the governor side there are viable marks on the gear ,these are not the ones you line it up with. If you remove the governor and need to line it up again let me know,I have a couple motors sitting around,I can count how many teeth from those front marks to the ones you can't see. You can simply remove the governor housing, clean it and lube everything, leaving the actual governor stuck in place. I have provided my phone number....... I removed the governor housing and when you push the throw out bearing only one side opens and fingers that push on the bearing one is broken. It looks like I need another governor. I know trying to time the governor with the magneto would be next to impossible for me with matching the timing marksCorrect,if you remove the governor on a cub with a magneto you must get the governor back in the correct place, unfortunately those markings are on the back of the gear and not visible from the governor side.
