Farmall Cub

Today I went to start the CUB and it cranked just fine but it was making a noise and the clutch peddle was moving back and forth a little. I also was not able to get it into gear, because of the gears would grind if I tried. I am assuming it is the throw-out berring. Question is do I have to split the tractor to change the berring out???

Thanks
Steve

I am not sure if it the clutch release bearing or not but YES you do have to split the tractor to replace the clutch release(throw-out bearing) if it is bad. Maybe just needs clutch adjusted. How's the free play. You need about 1/2" between the fingers and the release bearing.

When was the last time you used it?

Could be the clutch is stuck to the flywheel - though with the noise issue the bearing's suspect.

But point is - if you're continuing to mess around with it, be careful.

With the clutch in, and gears grinding - you can be pretty sure if you manage to get it in gear you're going to be moving - even with the clutch in. So - just make sure you've got plenty of room around you.

The last time I used it ( about a month ago) I just drove it in the barn and I put it in neutral. I went out to use it yesterday and it started just fine but was making noise so I shut it down. I started it back up to see if I could shift gears and imeditaly they would grind so I did not persue trying that while it was in the barn, as I did not need a runaway tractor. If the plate is stuck how can I get it unstuck??? I will try that when I pull it outside.

Thanks
Steve

Let me add that if I pushed the clutch pedal in just a little the noise stopped, but if I pushed it in all the way it started making noise again. When I let off of the clutch I could see it move in and out a little. Hope this helps describe what I might have.

but if I pushed it in all the way it started making noise again.

THIs means the clutch is out of adjustment, do not push it all the way down, let up when you hear the noise

procedure is on another web site that I can not mention here add dot com to your subject title and go do some research on their tech pages

yes you do have to split the cub to replace the throwout bearing and there are s=certain bearings not to use. however you propably just need to do some adjusting

good luck

Ron

... You need about 1/2" between the fingers and the release bearing.
There should be only an 1/8" clearance between the TOB and the fingers when everything is adjusted right. There will be one inch free play on the pedal. There should be around a 1/4" of graphite protruding from the front of the TOB, all smooth with no chunks taken out of it.
As was mentioned on the other Forum, it sounds as if one of the fingers is causing your problem. Also, there should be a return spring on the pedal to bring the pedal all the way up against the platform. Make sure it's in good shape.
