Farmall H Starter Button

The Starter button on my H (located at the bottom and behind the steering post) went from 1939 until a couple of years ago. I replaced it and mounted it to the steering post like
later ones. I used an after market mount bracket and heavy duty cables. Recently when I pressed the button nothing happened. I twisted and tapped on the button and it started a
couple of times. Then it wouldn't and it began electrical fritzing/sparking seemingly between the mount and the steering post. Yesterday I removed everything, took a flap grinder
and cleaned up all connections and put everything back together. NOTHING!!! It will click or clack, but not turn over the engine. Hand cranking works, but isn't fun. Should I just
get a new starter button, or what the heck is the problem??? Thanks, kelly

Lots of aftermarket electrical parts are junk. I'd try a new switch.

Every replacement I have bought in the last ten years failed after a couple seasons. Not sure if anyone makes a good one any longer.

Same issue with my M. original lasted bout 60 years replaced and lasted less than 2 years

Ask if you can get a discount buying in bulk. Maybe 12 at a time.

A more permanent solution is to use a relay as in the link. This allows the poor switches to be replaced by a small simple momentary contact starter button, that puts voltage on the small terminal. Jim

Exactly what I finally did on my T6 crawler. Problem solved. Fought the original style replacements for way too long.

Replacements are JUNK. Nowhere near the quality of original. Put it this way, the original push button on my 43 finally quit working, and I never bothered about replacing it. Because I new what the drill would be on cheapo reproduction replacements.
So, I just hand crank start it. Has a distributor, so that's not fun. If I'm using it much at all, I just park it on a hill and roll start it.

It's the same switch as my Case tractors. I bought my switches from CarQuest. ST-6 I believe is the part number. I've not had a single problem with them.

I have actually rebuilt a couple of originals. If you look at it, you will see that it can be taken apart. Just clean up the brass contacts and put it back together.

I really hate China JUNK!!! Do you think that if a guy has several old tractors it would be a good idea to collect spare parts that are original like the starter switch? Then maybe rebuild/repair them as suggested?
