Sometimes when I try to start my tractor it just makes a grinding noise, but other times it doesnt and starts right up. Could it be that my starter isnt kicking in? Is my starter going bad? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

You need to replace the starter drive, it is worn out. Most likely you also need to replace the ring gear on the flywheel.

replace starter drive if needed.....you might be able to flip the flywheel over to get better teeth, unless someone else has done it already. I switch the tractor back to 6 volt so it isent so hard on the gears, especally if it sounds like a lot of slop in there. Another trick my dad did was park it on a small incline if you can so you dont use the starter 30 times in a day. or let it idel slow.....

I would suspect it is your ring gear. They start and stop in the same place and wear out there. Pull the starter and look at the teeth on the starter and ring gear and you will know which it is or maybe both as Rusty says. 6 or 12 volt makes no difference on these. I have started several of them with 12 volt batteries for years and it doesn't hurt those starters at all. I did have trouble with the remanufactured ones with the aluminum end plate breaking, but the original cast end plates will hold up for years.

I had the same problem - had the starter rebuilt for something like $80. The the ring gear was actually OK. Starts like a champ, now.
