Farmall H Traction Problems

I have traction problems with my 1940 Farmall H. I pull in class with stock hp and rpms. It weighs 3500 lbs with 13.6 x 38 tires. Drawbar height limit of 20 inches. It spins out in 1st gear. Or it pukes out in 2nd gear. Any ideas?

Play with air presure. I have 4 sets of 15.5 38 firestone super al tractions and each set uses differnt air pressure.

I have to put pressed steel wheels on the front, which should give me 20 lbs to move back. I can also remove battery ,starter, and generator if I think it will help. That will probably give another 50-75 pounds to put on the rear wheels. Do you think that this will help much?

New Firestone Field & Road. What kind of prep should I do to the tires. The rules say no cut or sharpened tires. There is room for "interptation" to that rule. Maybe my 26 HP tractor doesn't have enough power to compete in stock classes.

If you spin out it doesn't sound like a lack of power. The new tires might be the problem. Trade them for a set about half wore out. Low air pressure with a tall lug and you might be folding them over on a hard track.

put a msd box on it from a dirt track sales company that has been modified to pull the timing back when it sinces a suden rpm spike.

What you need to do is look at the tire pattern after you pull to see if the tire is flat in the holes or up in the middel of the pattern. If it is that tells you that you need more air in the tires to keep them flat so you are useing all of the tires bars on them. Also your tire side wall ply will hold up your tire with low air in them if it is like 6 ply instead of 4 ply. The 6 ply tire will need less air. This is something you will have to work on to fine the right psi in the tires

Well it depends I never use new tires unless it a sandy track. You want a hard tires that are age or older and have use on them. But watch for the middle beening wore out, you don't want that. You don't want new tread cause if you watch the lug will bend back over it self on a hard track and you want a low ply tire. I have had good luck with field and roads and armstrongs.

(quoted from post at 22:34:36 10/09/09) Why dont you just go ahead and say it....."Traction Control"
well traction control in dirt track racing is a sick bird msd boxes are legal. i hadnt seen a rule against traction control in tractor pulling.

Traction control is outlawed in our club! Its in the rules! HAHAHA!!

We ran restricter plates for the longest time. Works great! Chad

Get your front end lighter so you get a better weight transfer to the rear wheels. If the front isnt comming up when your spinning out, you need to move weight around.

"Lose weight to gain weight."

Estimated, front axle weighs 1150 to 1250#. Get it down to 900#. I got mine down to 775, its light, and will pick the front up easy under a pull.

Also, if you got too much power, back off the throttle, if the weight is right, the nose will lift if its hooking up and pulls the sled.

Idle it down to help grab a bite. ChadS

Glad you are talking about H farmalls problem of spinning out,my problem with my H is spinning out in the 7,500 class and I am running 16.9X38 full cut 151 Firestone on 15 inch rims with 11lbs air pressure, any ideas

I Have a H with s Super H engine I rune 13.6x38 tires spinning out is not a problem. I Have about 37 hp on it with stock engine other than a cam ground for pulling, I dont dare pull secound gear, will power out. You nmust have spent a loyt in your engine. In our area a H falls short in secound gear. Last pull I made this year I bumped the rpm to 25% over and held first place untill the last puller beat me with a H in secound gear, couled tell he spent a lot of money one his engine. My tires are new on a hart pulling track more air pressure works better for me my tractor needs to slip or my front end comes up and when I throttle back to lower it I cant recover RPM. Any ideas how to fix this proble I would apreciat it

Thanks Mike
