I have an H that sat outside most of its life before i owned it. I recently changed the trans. and rearend oil. when i drained the old stuff out i got about 1 gallon of water and 3-4 gallons of oil. after i put in 6 gallons of new 90 wt. it leaks, looks like its coming from the front of the transmission. I am thinking about taking it a local tractor mechanic whos specialty is Farmalls. he told me there are 2 seals and possibly a bearing to replace. and he would have to pull the belly pump. he quoted me a price in the neighborhood of $500.00. is that reasonable? thanks for your time. Jim

Jim,if you got any mechanical ability at all,you can fix it yourself.Ask here,we can guide you through it.Steve

Yes you will have to take off the belly pump which is a 2 person job to get on and possibly off. The 2 bolts that hold the drive shaft on and a yoke depending on which seal is leaking. (They both have yokes that slip over a shaft). Then 3 bolts that hold the seal housing on and you"re home free. Hope this doesn"t intimidate you but if you have an hour and a few wrenches you can save $400

I'm a rookie mechanic and I've been into the transmission on my H to replace the pilot bearing. Other than the weight of the belly pump and trans cover there's not much to it. Seals are cheap, bearing is probably around $50 and adds about an hour to the job. As a bonus you'll see how to replace the clutch and throwout bearing while you're underneath it.
