Farmall M head

Im putting together a Farmall M engine and I am planing on using Denny"s 306 ci over bore kit and I was wondering what head to use. Everyone Ive talked to say the 450 propane head but they are so hard to find and when you do find them they cost so much. The head I have now is a stock farmall M head casting #8060 . Its a good casting but needs to be rebuit new seat's, guild's, valve' s, springs and locks. I found rebuilt heads for a M,W6 casting #8777,8790,6336 also for a M,W6,400 casting #8674 and also for a 400,450 casting #362174R . All the heads I found are in the $500-$600 range and come with new seats and guides but NO valve's, springs, or locks. I was planing on some miner port and polish work using a bridgeport mill. Are any of the casting's I listed better to start out with then the 8060 casting I have now or should I use what I have? I planing on running stock RPM.

Use the head that U have, 8060d Stay far away from anything that says 8777d, very low compression ! So your pulling the sleeve's an boring the block ! Is there plenty of material left (liner) to run !

Should be a good (60)hp tractor with that head.
306 x .20 hp range

What makes the 362174R head better? Is it the port size/shape? The size/shape of the bowl? Or the valve size? Smaller combustion chamber? The head I have now (8060) needs valve's and If I was to buy the 362174R head I would have to buy valve's for it also.

At this time I would not buy the piston's from denny's. You will be very discussed with the results> (No slam to denny's)
Your not increasing ci enough to make a major difference. Im building a 370ci (c-264) m motor. Also i'm building a stock C-264 to 281 ci.

When you stroke past 5.75" you will have to clearance the cam and the bore !

Best bet would be to stay the same rite now and buy a good 450 gas head.
When you want to bore and stroke. I would highly recommend going to 7.25" minimium ! And stay with inside the existing bore 4-5/16" solves alot of cylinder wall failure problem's

If you can do many thing's on your own , Call Gary Baker in Mi. Do not waste his time, He will work with you and treat you extremely fair !

Hope this offr's you some option's. My humble opinion. Have a good day

When compared to stock,
the 8060 and the 450 head produces the same cyl pressure.

Id keep the 8060, port it a little, maybe mill it down to bump the compression up a tad.

Ive dynoed the 306 with ALL the "goodies" they offer. 72 hp at rated rpm on race fuel with the 8060. A well built 281 will do the same.
