Farmall M Pulling

I have a '47 Farmall M that I am interested in learning the ropes at pulling with this year. Until I figure the basics out I probably won"t invest much, so for now it"s stock and even a little rusty (which I hope to resolve before summer) but I want to see what I"m dealing with before throwing much money in it, it"s all about the fun of it for me anyway, but I don"t want to go out pull after pull and be fifty feet behind the closest tractor. Is it possible to even enter into a class where an old rusty M can even be mildly competitive? Also, I can find no definitive article on what I need, how my hitch needs to be or anything else to even know what I need to start with to even show up. Anyone that pulls near or around Southern KY / TN and preferably has a farmall of some sort they pull and has a document or link they could share with me to shed some light on this would help me more than you can imagine. I"m not looking for anyone"s secrets, but if anyone would share maybe a vague idea of how they have an M set up, (hitch/weights, safety, etc.) would be an asset as well.

The pulling club I belong to here in south-central
Idaho is a stock tractor pulling club. The guys that pull the M'S are very competitive in their class. The M's are hard to beat. I pull a 37 farmall F30 and a 37 farmall F12, both stock. Both are Painted up and restored, sure is fun. We just pull for ribbons and bragging rights. Just paint your old girl up and go have fun. Putting a lot of money into these old tractors is not always the answer. Good luck.

This smmer will be my 28th year pulling sleds. My advice is do your homework! Attend some pulls where you intend to compete. GET A COPY OF THE RULES! Rules at different places vary. Observe what and how the pullers are using/doing. Ask questions! Most pullers are happy to help out novice pullers and wise pullers know that it"s always a good thing to bring new pullers to the sport! Just about like NASCAR, only about 195 miles an hour slower! I agree with the other gents, get in there watch the winners and ask questions. We have been sucessful over the years and have helped many newcomers to the sport, some even ended up whooping us a couple times. Start out stock and see where your interests take you, you may after while feel the need for speed and progress to the higher performance levels, there is a place for everyone, one thing I will say, if you decide to fix up to get a performance edge , police your self, get in the classes which your tractor belongs and allow others who are where you are now to have a chance at winning, there are those out there who will take a 100 hp M (or whatever brand)and put it in "stock" classes--- and feel good about winning!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You will be able to pick them out, they are the ones running two gears higher than you can, getting full pulls when you are at half track, mEl

Don"t worry about paint for now, you are going to change things over time, get it the way you want it then paint it. Rust pulls just as good and makes people wonder!

Here in Michigan tire height is a issue with the thumb pullers .I went to one of there pulls with my Super M that has 38" tires and they said they were not legal because they didn't come on the tractor. Yet the 38s were put on at the dealer by I.H as a factory replacment...

I pulled anyway and killed them in 5500 at 345 ft.

So point being learn the rules , even the silly ones that no one else has. It will save a yelling match and keep the fun in it .

What kind of club doesnt know that SM came with and ONLY with 38" rims, i think you need to find a new club that know what a tractor is lol

38s were a factory replacment tires offered by I.H .... I use Carliton farm supply for parts which has been a I.H dealer for over 60 years and this is the info they gave me .

We traveled a fair distance for this pull just to find this out .

But then they said if we wanted to stick around and pull the night time event that they would allow them . This pull was in Elkton MI labor day weekend.
It was a county fair /tractor show etc etc ,it was a very nice event but they didn't like outsiders i guess . Maybe they need to get with the times , there was three of us that they did this to .
It was just a ten dollar trophy but the double standard from day time event to night time event was bull. Post stupid rules like this on your web site.
Both my pulls made yahoo in the video section 5500 and 6000 under Super M and i don't own a video camera. It's kind of neat seeing yourself on the web .

They must have been busting your chops because you had too wide a 38" tire on your SM,because every M or Sm or H or whatever back in those days came standard with a 38" tire.What is your tire width.

There rule was 36" tires . They said they were the standard size for "Ms". It started a big stink , i just have the Firestone field and road tires on new factory rims . Stock width.

My traveling friend had a 460 with some big tires on it that wern"t stock but they were killing it power wise. He had just bought it and was trying to get it tuned .
