Farmall super a

Hello I've been working on my grandfather's farmall super a I've gotten it to get spark at plugs has a good blue spark new carburetor can smell gas on plugs and even put either in engine but still won't fire i even gapped the plugs too

Have you got the spark wires back on correctly. Firing order is 1-3-4-2 with one starting at the radiator and about 1:00 position on the cap. Also what do you have for ignition - battery or magneto. Did you have it off the tractor and possible back incorrectly.

You followed what I posted about timing the rotor drive gears in the mag in your other post? If they are out of time it can still fire the plugs but it may not direct the spark to the proper cylinder. Are the spark plugs new or used? If used what do they look like. If they are black they may be fouled from a rich mixture. If this has sat a while might be best to get a new set. Just the smell of gas does not necessarily mean there is enough in the cylinders to fire unless the plugs are wet. Farmalls don’t need a lot of choke, pull the choke closed and crank the engine a couple revolutions then open it back up (push in towards the engine) and then crank a bit. If it doesn’t start then repeat with it choked only a couple of turns of the engine. I should have mentioned that you should keep your posts on this tractor in the Farmall & IH section, but this works.

You need fuel, spark, and compression for an engine to run do you have all of those and is your firing order correct??

Well i have replaced cap, rotor, points ,condenser could i have changed the timing that way ?

I put starting fluid in the intake even tried taking plug out and putting starting fluid in there still wont fire .could that mean its out of timing?

Did you get the link to the Blue Ribbon Service Manual in the reply I sent in reply to your PM?

HOPEFULLY, you did, it contains instructions for timing the rotor gears and timing the mag to the tractor.

Yes but if you think the timing is off thats what I'll do thank you

Very common now days for a new condenser to be bad right out of the box. Put the old one back in and see what happens. As for timing if you didn't put the plug wires on the distributor cap the same as they came off you have the firing order messed up

But the plugs are sparking a blue spark

Why wouldn't if firing with starting fluid in hooked a spark plug tester on it it was firing

It says cylinder, one top dead center and ajust rotor to fire cylinder one i watched it on YouTube
Tractor in Neutral. Pull the plug out of #1 cylinder. ground the plug to the block with its plug wire on it. Put your finger over the #1 plug hole and crank the engine over. Does the plug show a spark at the same time your finger is pushed off the plug hole? If not, the timing is off.

Welcome to YT forums and PartsASAP
The mag gears must be timed to the marks, and cylinder 1 must be on the compression stroke. Put a cotton ball in the #1 plug hole and turn it by hand till the cotton blows out. then turn to the flywheel marks align. Then set the mag timing!..Jim

If you didn’t unbolt the main part of the magneto off the tractor you couldn’t have changed the timing. Only the gears that drive the rotor can be off. Also a plug can fire outside the cylinder but under compression it takes more voltage to fire the plug. Usually it is agreed that if the spark can jump a 1/4” gap off the the coil wire terminal or at the plugs that is adequate to fire under compression.

The cylinder had to be on top dead center of the compression stroke. The piston is also passed by TDC at the end of the exhaust stroke. The compression stroke can be felt by holding a thumb or finger over the plug hole and then cranking the engine slowly with the crank if possible. When air pushes out that is the compression stroke. Then turn the engine to TDC. This should all be good if it you didn’t pull the mag off and it was running for your grandfather. The other thing is the valves could be stuck open. Take all the plugs out and hold a thumb/finger in them and crank it. They should all give a good blast of pressure past your fiinger. You need at least 3 of them pushing air maybe two would work for it to start.

Thank you will try that

"If you didn’t unbolt the main part of the magneto off the tractor you couldn’t have changed the timing."

Somebody MAY have swapped around the sparkplug wires since the last time it successfully ran.

Been 3 years since it was running. I didn't remove the magneto and thank you for the advice
