Farmall Super M

I have a Super M, and was told by the guy at the tractor shop that I could use IH hytrans fluid in the transmission. I was then told by another friend that I should use 80w90 gear oil. Could somebody help me out here? I don"t have a manual and have not owned an M for very long. If I can use hytrans I was thinking about using the whole rearend as my hydraulic reservoir for my loader. Anyway, if anybody knows I would appreciate your input.

These tractors all used 80W-90 or even 140 transmission oil.
I don't believe I would use hydraulic oil in the transmission in this tractor, unless you were using it exclusively in -30 degree weather.

I missed the part about using it for a resivoir. You can do that. Either oil the Wisconsin Cowman suggested will probably work, but I would go with the 30 weight. Be sure that it is non-detergent. The old books recommend 90 weight in them.

You can use Hy-Tran with no problem, I've been using it for 3 years in my M. You do need good seals and you might hear more gear noise than if you were using 90 wt.

Gear noise is a result of wear, go to your IH dealer and they'll tell you Hy-Tran is fine to run in the older tractors.

I know what the IH dealer will tell you. I put Hy-Tran in my 200 several years ago on their recommendation and after plowing about 60 acres of tobacco I had to work on the rear end. The shop foreman there told me to put gear oil back in it as that was what GEAR OIL was for. IH dealers like to sell Hy-Tran.

Any gear set that doesn't involve hydraulics or wet clutch packs and doesn't use copper based bushings should use GL-5.
Gear sets using copper based bushings are well protected with GL-4 Marine gear lube.
Lets not forget how many wet clutch packs and wet brakes have been ruined by some genius pouring either GL-5 or the cheapest trans/hydraulic oil they could find.
Didn't some of those M, Super M, 400 & 450's require TA,transmisison or final drive work even if the proper oil was used?
