Farmall Super M

I have a question about valve adjustment. Maybe it has already been addressed on here, if so I couldn't find it. What is the procedure for adjusting the valves on a super M? I don't know how to set the valve lash or when to adjust the valves(cold or hot) or anything on these old engines. I am used to hydraulic lifters and more modern engines that my dad taught me to work on.

Your best bet is to buy an owners manual for your super M. It will provide you with detailed instructions of the proper procedure. The final adjustment is supposed to be made with the engine hot, and the clearance you want is .017". I have found it much easier to set those valves at .020" with the engine cold, or maybe even about .022", and you will be close enough when the engine warms up.

Valve adjustment process—Farmall 4 cylinder: Firing order 1-3-4-2
1. While slowly turning the engine with the crank, watch when #1 cylinder (front one) exhaust valve closes and #1 intake valve starts to open. That is when the piston is at Top Dead Center (TDC). Note: the timing pointer should be lined up with the I I mark (double line) on the front pulley.
2. Rotate the crankshaft exactly 1 rotation to put the #1 piston at TDC again with both valves closed and ready for adjustment. Adjust the valve to rocker arm clearance so the feeler gauge has a slight drag as you pull it out. (check specifications for correct amount) Be sure to tighten the lock nut!! Note: this is where you can set ignition timing also.
3. With both valves set on #1, rotate the crankshaft ½ turn and #3 cylinder will be in position to adjust it’s valves.
4. One more ½ turn of the crank and #4 can be adjusted. Note: the timing pointer will be at the I I mark again.
5. Once more turn the crank ½ rotation and #2 can be set.
6. Re-check all lock nuts, install a new gasket, and you are done.
