Farmall Super M

I have a Farmall Super M (ser. no. F-19055 J) that is running hot. It has no thermostat & no fan shroud. At idle it runs at 150. It doesn't seem to have a bad water pump, it is getting good flow into the radiator. It is all tight like it was recently rebuilt, I bought it at an auction so I don't know. It has M & W live hydraulics and an M & W throttle plate, everyting else appears original. Hope you can help. Thanks a lot!

OK,put a thermostat in it. It needs the back pressure to get the coolant to circulate to the rear of the engine. Without it,the coolant is moving so fast,it circulates around the front cylinders and lets the rears get hot. My brother bought a Volvo,or Freightliner,I forget which,but had a Cummins that took 2 thermostats. It was running hot,had NO thermostats. Put 2 new ones in and it fixed the problem.

Check your radiator for trash and debris in the core vents. It should never get any hotter than 110-130 at an idle. Mine barely gets to 190 working it hard.

After running it for a while (and working it) does it actually overheat and boil? Put a candy thermometer in the radiator neck and watch it. If it reads the same as the gauge, and coolant is flowing well, the cores could be plugged up in the radiator. Then no matter how well they are cleaned on the outside, they will overheat due to lack of flow through all core tubes. Also after running it up to "hot" and shutting it off, feel the radiator to see if parts of it are much cooler than other parts. If so, try a professional flush, followed by a gallon of vinegar in clean water for an hour of operation, then drain flush again with H2O, and refil with coolant. If it still heats, the radiator will need to be cleaned at a shop, or rebuilt. JimN
