Farmhand Loader,

Ive got a 45 JD A with a farmhand loader on it,
I saw an ad on this file and they called it a rock picker i guess cause of the loading spikes on the front to pick up rocks and other junk,
I was wondering about the cables as they are a litle rusty looking,
but otherwise in good cond over the seat,
do they have a thing for snapping or going bad if not used for awhile,
i looked at them , and they seem ok and the pulley's look ok too,
what company built these thing's as Id like to get some info on them and study it more,
I was a little weary of them at 1st,
But now that i know a little bit more about them,
I think thier really cool,

Farmhand loaders were built in Hopkins, MN but the company has long been out of business.

Hi 55-50,
this farmhand is in good cond but i was wondering about the cables and pullys,
If theres a little rust on the pulleys would they be ok to use or should I just take the whole thing off and sell it and be done with it,
I was thinking it might be neat to use it for some things
but if its gona be more hassle than good ,
Ill just get rid of it and that'll be it,

A little rust shouldn't hurt cables. You can take an old heavy rag and squirt some thick gun grease into the cloth and wipe over the cables to lubricate them and it should be good to use. Wear leather gloves because there might be a broken strand of cable here or there which can poke your hands and that can be painful!!

I'm assuming this is the style of Farmhand loader that has the big frame behind the tractor mounted off the rear axle castings and has a single control valve off to the left of the operator. If so, those are somewhat top heavy and care is needed in their use to prevent tipping the unit over. But they reach very high in relation to a lot of loaders.

Hi 55,
I just got you email and i think ill do what you said to do,
and grease the cables with gun grease and they should be ok,
I just made the last payment on the A so,, im gonna go and pick it up maybe next week and bring it home,
I think Ill drain the oil and look at the filter under the hood and see if everything is ok,
then,,, Ill fill it with oil and put some in the oil bath aircleaner and shoot some oil in the cylinder's so they wont be dry when it turns over,
out a couple of new plugs in it and look at the carb clean it out and it should take off
with not too much of a problem,
