Fence Charger

Fence Charger was made by International Electric Company Chicago 22 Ill. and was called Weed Chopper Electric Fence. On the bottom it has fence Omatic Serial #413331 110AC. It is missing looks like a capacitor on the bottom. If any one has and idea about this I would appreciate some help. THANKS

Just wondering what area you are from. My Maternal Grandfather was an Ogletree, He was from the Phoenix City, Al/ Columbus, Ga Area. His sister had a family tree done in the 1960's, and found out that Jesse James is a distant cousin..

What you need is NOT a capacitor, it's the "chopper", the plug-in module that "pulses" the unit.

About every farm supply store used to sell them, don't know where you'd find one nowadays, though. There were a number of different replacment units, some with 3 pins, some with 4, etc..

Electric fencer GURU 36coupe will probably see this and MAY be able to help you.

I did find a 10-year-old article about the International Company on the 'net, don't know if they are still around, though.

International merged into Zareba. You may see the charger part number when dealing with them except that Zareba was just bought out by someone else. Woodlands or Wood something. A larger outdoor type corporation and doesn't show up on the Zareba website. I have an old International 909 and they carry parts for a 909 except the parts they have is for the new circuit board style charger so not the individual parts like transformers are available.

I ordered a new transformer board for my Zareba charger back in August and the very friendly, experienced, and helpful customer rep advised me they had cut the reps in Minnesota back to him and somebody else in the office and he was being laid off in another month or two. Apparently that sorry new company got rid of all the experienced people in Minnesota and was moving the customer service to the new company HQ. A good reason not to buy Zareba anymore.

I remember seeing both the 3 and 4 pin choppers recently. I think it was at Buchheits in Perryville, MO, but it could have been Orschelins(sp).

This type of fencer can start fires so I. try to get people to stop useing them.In Maine a fencer has to have UL approval.The on time is so long that they can burn shingles, grass and old tar paper.No company makes the weed burner any more.NEW choppers are around 15 bucks now.International did make a solid state model that was a good unit.Very easy to service.Most fence charger companies were bought up by 1 company that finally became Zareba.Zareba changed the designs and used the old names.When a Zareba charger fails you have to change the complete circuit board.Costs about 40 bucks plus 9 bucks shipping.I have a horse man that brings in his old Parmak every spring for service.I change a diode or two.I charge him 5.00 and he always gives me 10.00.The new Parmaks have gotten very complicated and costly to service.

Wont work.Transformer is the wrong type.If you insist on using that type of charger choppers are still avaiable.No transformers available now.

Do a search here for fence charger or similar language and you will find a schematic posted by mmidlam for a 909 solid state. Been quite a while now. A simple circuit. But as 36 alluded to, you can't find a transformer. If you look at it and have a source for the parts, let us know.

Hey Coupe, have you seen those Taylor Grazing Cyclops chargers? I have one and like the fact that it has a external and internal replaceable fuse, both have blown on me a couple of times. Seems the Stafix chargers have no fuse and the circut board gets fried. What causes this? Never had good luck with those Zarebas, what pieces of junk. I also have a couple of Gallaghers.

The import chargers put the fuse inside the case.It would cost 2 bucks to put fuse holders on the case but I have a jar full of 30 amp fuses that stupid owners put in them.Gallaghers are fine until you need a new output transformer then it cost 100 bucks.Parmak transformers cost 25 bucks.

Fi shock is a poor rig built cheap, takes a month to get parts.

The 909 solid state plug in unit sells for 47 bucks.There isnt 5 bucks worth of parts in side of it.I repaired them when there were a lot of these chargers coming into the shop.

I was talking to my bro.in law just the other day about how i might rig up a chevy distributor to function as a fence charger. Would a solid state ignition coil provide a constant current? Points type would have to be rotated to charge the condenser but it could be done.Thoughts?
