I have just purchased a TO 35 with a gas engine.I want to change the oil and filter in the engine. What type of oil should I put in it?..10w 30???...10w 40???? or another type....

Thanks for the info

The zink additive has been removed from automotive oils . It is needed in older flat tappet cam / lifter engines to minimize cam and lifter wear . Newer motors with roller cams don't need it . Use diesel rated oils . They still have the zink additive .
Wally world carries 3 or 4 different brands . Shell , mobil , and several others . I use Shell Rotella T in all my older vehicles , and lawn and garden equipment .

i use shell rotella 10w40 diesel oil in my TO-35.

so far no problem starting in the winter, but i live in ky so it does not get as cold here as in the north.

maintains good oil pressure with that oil.

I use the same oil in my dodge diesel truck.

forgot to mention:

whatever oil you decide to use, i would not use synthetic oil,

synthetic oil is great oil, but most synthetic oils have very good cleaning packages, so it will start cleaning out the inside of your old engine.

the molecules of synthetic oil are smaller than reg dino oil and it can creap in places that regular oil will not creap.

Therefore, synthetic oil can cause oil leaks you did not have before and as it cleans up the (stuff) that is coated to the inside of your engine, that stuff can get into oil lines and stop them up, (not good).

just my two cents, stay with dino oil.

good luck with your tractor,

check at your Fergy dealer, many times they have oil filters at reasonable prices.

note:
the canister oil filter should have a washer and spring inside of canister to hold filter aganist the motor block.

If not, ask your dealer about them and order them as you must have this spring and washer to press the filter aganist the block.

Otherwise your oil will just circle around the filter and not go through the filter.

I use Rotella 15 W 40. I believe the canister filter is 1010 Gold from NAPA. There are spin on conversion kits if you wish to go that route for the filter.

Depends on the ambient temeratures where your located SAE 30 W is good from about 40F to ~90F. SAE 10W30 is good from about 15F to ~90F and 10W40 is good from about 15F to ~120F

If you want to use a 10w30 instead of diesel oil look at Kendall Titanium. It says right on the back it contains ZDDP for older flat tappet cams.Nothing wrong with the diesel oil either...I have used both in my street cars with flat tappet cams.

Which oil? This should be interesting.

Always many different opinions!

I use Caltex Havoline Classic multi grade oil for older (pre 1986) engines in my Ferguson tractor and older Jaguar cars:

"High quality engine oil for use in older passenger car and light-duty commercial vehicle engines where API SG or lower performance lubricants are required and SAE 25W-60 viscosity is acceptable.

RECOMMENDED FOR
Naturally aspirated gasoline engines in passenger cars and light commercial vehicles.

Not recommended for use in engines that require ACEA-classified oils, in turbocharged engines, in CNG or LPG-fuelled engines, in any diesel engines or in motorcycle engines. As SAE 25W-60 is an unusually high viscosity grade, seldom recommended by engine builders, its acceptability for each application should be determined before any use."

Caltex is the local version of Texaco.
