Ferguson tractor

LEV

Just purchased a 1952 Ferguson. I rebuilt the carburator. Problem: it will run fine for a while but then, while idling, sometimes it will suddenly shut down. Can"t restart it right away but after a while it will restart. Any suggestions?

Go to the Ferguson Forum and check the archives.

Check the spark. It should be FAT AND BLUISH-WHITE, the color of lightning. If it"s not , check the point gap. Is it 6v OEM or 12v with an alternator? If you have a 12v system make sure there is a resistor in the primary ignition circuit OR that you have a real 3.2 ohm 12 V coil. Some times the ignition switch goes bad and get too high a resistance. Put a jumper around the ignition switch and see if it runs that way. If it does then replace the ignition switch.

If you have the requisite spark, then make sure the carb is getting fuel. There"s a screen in the elbow on the fuel line at the carb. Se if that"s clogged. open the plug at the bottom of the carb and make sure the tank valve is full open. Fuel should gush out the bottom of the fuel bowl CONTINUOUSLY. If it dribbles or is intermittent you"ll need to find out why.make sure the vent hole in the fuel cap is open Check the fuel line from the seiment bowl to the carb and then check the screen in the ediment bowl. Blow back through the fuel line toward the tank with compressed air. The fuel out let in the tank could be plugged.
