Ferguson vs Ford-Ferguson

what is the difference between the Ferguson and the Ford-Ferguson also,I would like to know how to find the age and serial number for my tractor, the builders plate is missing from off the steering coluim, but there is a date under the seat on the access plate for the rear end which reads:April 7,1949 is this a casting date for the steel plate or could it be the date the tractor was made? Any information will be appreciated.

There are many cosmetic differences in the two machines, however the biggest difference is that the Ford used a flat head Ford engine and Ferguson used an over-head valve Continental or Standard motor in his tractor. This gave a little more power over the 9N/2N

the 39 9n was called the ford tractor with ferguson system, not called ford ferguson.
The ferg 20 was a near clone of the 9n in 1946.
The ohv engine was better. The 47-up 8n was a superior machine.

I believe Ford and Ferguson parted ways after Henry died in 1948 and the Ford corp. screwed Ferguson because of a handshake deal between Harry and Henry .
Henrys son figured that there wasn't a written contract , so the deal didn't exixt . It had to do with the Ferguson 3 pt hitch patent .
Ford spent a lot of money on that one .From then on , there were many differences between the now 8N ford and the now Ferguson TO30 .
Ford 8N tractors had a flat head 4 cyl. engine .The distributor was on the front of the engine until 1953 + or -- , and was then located on the drivers right side . A way to tell a early 8N from a late 8N .
Ferguson TO30 had a overhead valve engine with the oil filter on the drivers right side on the outside . The distributor is on the drivers left side .
If you note the number off of the distributor side of the block , some nice person on this site could probably give you a year for the tractor .

Also a 4 speed tranny instead of the 3 speed and both brakes on the right side instead of the left on the left side.
