fertilizer in grain drill

how many you guys put the fertilizer threw your grain drills instead of spreading it.thanks RICK

For the cost its cheaper to broadcast it and less time consuming. I do put lime on with the drill in beans. Lime is a lot easier to clean up, fertilizer is not as easy and hard on the drill. Bandit

Rent on the spreader is a lot cheaper than buying a new drill. That fertilizer will ruin a drill.

We did for many years and it can be tough on boxes and the delivery mechanism. But we only used a hose to wash them out, and after they dried brushed on used engine oil. However if you can powerwash the boxes and after they dry, oil them down, I wouldn't be too concerned with corrosion. Powerwashing will remove most of the bad stuff from the pores that hosing misses.

No longer farming but we used to do it, then Dad started broadcasting and you do not get neer as acurate an application broadcasting it, Notice all the 2-3' wide strips in the wheat fields after they have been topdressed. The only thing is clean it good after you are done, we did not have good cleaning equipment then.

If you apply lime or fertilizer with a drill, do you mix it with the seed or put in the grass seeder? This is an interesting topic.

I plant about 100 acres of oats every spring then the same acreage is planted to winter wheat in Sep. I run a mixture of MAP and KCL through my drill for both, based on soil tests. Most of my N is sprayed on as liquid. It just works out good for me that way. I find that with very little N going through the drill corrosion is not an issue.

You only apply if the machine is equiped with fertilizer boxes. Like on a John Deere drill a B is a plain drill and the FB is the fertilizer box version, F standing for fertilizer.

I have a 8250 jd drill have had it over 10 yrs. If cleaned properly each year will last along time. I sow 140# of triple 19 per acre with 3 bu oats to the acre. along with the grass seed I choose each year. works well

Well, they were designed with fertilizer boxes, so why wouldn't you use them??? I found quite a few drills with the fertilizer boxes rusted out I considered buying but past on. I found an Oliver, their father made them paint it with motor oil every season & it saved the drill, nothing rusted out. I prefer to plant with the seed & fertilizer together, I hate having to clean the drill & oil all the parts down!!
