Fertilizer Question

I got my soil sample back on a 2 acre alfalfa/orchard grass mix hay field I have. The recommendation of fertlizer was 0-60-245. Iam not able to handle a custom blend(fertlizer plant at co-op is being rebuilt). My question is, How many 50lb bags each of 0-46-0 and 0-0-60 would I need to get close to this recommendation. Or how much of 3-18-18 would I need.

That recommendation doesn't look right. How many lbs per acre is the being recommended ?

Im with ron on this one. these numbers dont add up. we grow alot of different hay mixtures and i have never heard numbers like that.. also if you have alfalfa in the mix with grass unless you have alot of legumes or spread alot of manure i would think you should have some nitrogen. we use things like 6-15-40 and 12-15-32 depending on the mix of hay..

I looked at the sample again and on the back it explains the fertlizer recommendation of 0-60-245 is for lbs per acre.

One and a half bags of 0-46-0 plus four bags of 0-0-60

Read the report again, they might not make any nitrogen recommendations.

Oops. Double those numbers because you have 50lb bags.

46% P so you need three 50lb bags

60% K so you need eight 50lb bags

It takes 100 pounds of 0-46-0 to get 46 lbs on actual P.

Think of the 46 as 46%.

So to get 60 Lbs it would take 133 lbs to get 60 lbs of P.

It would take 400 lbs of 0-0-60 to get 240 lbs of K.

You don't need to apply nitrogen to alfalfa,it makes nitrogen itself! if it were me i would forget the dap and just apply the potash,that will get you the most yield out of your hay.

Soil test recommendations are normally in pounds of nitrogen, but the pounds of phosphorous and potassium are for pounds of phosphate and potash, respectively, not pounds of the element.
