Fieldwork now??

It's cold here in SD so obviously there is no fieldwork going on. Around here it will be probably a month and a half or maybe two months before we can get any farming, or fieldwork, done. Got me to wondering, is there anything being done now in the line of fieldwork in the US. Maybe picking oranges in Florida, or maybe picking lettuce in California? Does any corn get planted this early in the Southern region? How about anybody putting up hay right now. Would be intresting to know. There MIGHT be some fertilizer being applied around here, MAYBE. Anything going on in your region?

I saw a guy chiselplowing last Monday, (1/14) just east of Moline Ill. Didnt appear to be picking up on the tires or on the plow!

With the global warming as it is, I expect we will be a month ahead of schedule this year.

I think it was last week temps were up to 60-70* here in Ohio. I was told someone saw some Amish out plowing.
It's 3* now so that likely stopped them.

Sometimes in the winter in Central Oh., farmers will do some tillage when it freezes the first 2-3"s. They can go out with the tractors and not get stuck, but they can still work the ground. There's several hundred acres around here that have been plowed (chisel I think) in the last few days.

I wanted to do some discing for wildlife (quail) but now we have too much snow. Hope to do some controlled burns come spring. Heading to the woods for timber stand improvements soon.

drove down to Yuma az over the weedend. Tractors were running every where. Lettuce, celery and broccolli were in full harvest. Alfalfa is grown year around from Phoenix to Yuma.

I did two discing jobs Saturday. One was to loosen the ground so the owner could put in some rye grass for horses. Another was for weed control. We got some rain today so I will be doing that one again in a few months. This is in southere Calif. Stan

Here in N. Florida we are ready to plant spuds. Been awfully wet recently. Have a plow day this coming wx and first wx in Feb.

We start earlier than others due to sun. My sweet corn is out of the fields in June/July. Late June thru August is only good for okra, melons, tomatoes. Everything else burns up in the heat.
